Good job i didnt buy one then! I'd read somewhere on the web quoting 165kg and quite fancied one as i enjoyed a ride one in the past, but not on anything tricky.

640 adventure is probably a better comparison, shame about the vibes.

Serious question though, who here is going to put their hand in their pocket and pay £5000-ish for this bike?

Dear god i'm so close to just throwing the credit card at the local dealer and ordering one £5k is a realistic price for a bike that if it lives up to standards expected should last 20 plus years.

Compared to the laughable prices BMW are asking for their new range of singles £5000 doesn't seem unreasonable.
No doubt some of the parallel importers will be knocking them out for a good deal less than that if you're patient. Not so long ago several dealers advertising in the MCN were knocking out XT660R's pre-registered for around £3500, compared to the £4500 my local Yamaha dealer is asking.

ps Not sure about judging the quality of components from a picture - I guess the Yamaha bolts will fur after one winter, if not before.

Is the mentioned weight with rack and panniers?

Or just hitting an extra 20 kg!!!! I like the looks and the idea behind....now once the first are out reality will show us the rest.

I was mainly looking at stuff like the swinging-arm which is nicely cast aluminium, rather than the cheap box section item on the XT660R. Hopefully they're got rid of the nasty pressed steel brake pedal, and fitted levers that offer some sort of adjustment.
It's not long now til the bike show at the NEC, and no doubt Yamaha will have one fully kitted out on display.

Id be really interested to see what you make of one of these after a year of ownership! If it survives the rallies etc. should be a good test. You not waiting on the KTM's?

I dont think it would be wise to put money down on one until a head to head test has been done against the new KTM 690 Adventure and with the BMW F800 GS.

Which is going to be the best ride !! We can only guess.

I think the Tenere is certainly going to win on price but im thinking the KTM will be the most "capable", with the BMW coming in as the most comfortable and practical. (at a guess)

Plus, who would be daft enough to buy a bike in its first year anyway ??

I wouldnt buy any of these new models until 2009 when they have hopefully sorted all the teething problems out and we have examples of high mileage and reliabilty.

I rather thought you might be looking at the swinging arm Mark; I don't think Yam will be using that box section again, ever -- too much competition from the other manufacturers to make the swinging arm a work of art!!
I will be looking for what shock is fitted; it won't be White Power!! (and I will be surprised at £5000 if it has Ohlins written on it).

Noted the mudguard Ted + the lack of fitted handguards/bark busters (in the pics anyway).

You will know as a bike salesman that there will be plenty of people buying this bike. Maybe there will even be a waiting list for it, at first; however, like you say here, I have never bought a new model of bike (in fact I have never owned a brand new bike - as you say, I prefer someone else to be the manufacturer's tester).
I could be tempted, but it hasn't happened yet!!

Price: yep, list price certainly, but the KTMs will always be delivered with high quality WP suspension.

Really cute bike. I am waiting for the magazine reviews. If it is as good as it is said I will replace my old KLE500 with one of these. I´ve been waiting a long for a bike of these characteristics: not very big like the GS1200s, hard enough to follow a KTM640 on the worst terrain, and more reliable than a KTM (sorry for the guys in orange), and of course, cheaper. If the XT660 is 7000 euros, and so is the MT03 (roadster with the same engine, but new frame, suspensions, etc), I hope Yamaha guys keep the price not far away 7500 euros.

Here in Spain we will have to wait until next March, though.

GREAT pictures there mate.

It does look small in those pictures unless the model (you I'm guessing) are very tall.

From comparing the pictures, it seems that a few of the pics have all the extras bolted on. Crash bars, alloy bash plate and screen protector plus what "seems" a higher front mudguard to accommodate knobblies
