3AJ Rear calipers

Just back from Algeria, where I discovered that the laser exhaust can smash off the caliper when bottoming out the suspension....
(Geoff - are you listening?)
Anybody got a rear caliper for sale?
Any advice on is the interchangability between models - I have been told that the DTR125 caliper is the same?

Hi Neil,
Thanks for the warning. I have sent you an email about the slim possibility of someone having a rear caliper available. It was some time ago, but worth a try.

you are not the first one to discover this.
i recommend the laser exhaust only for xt600 with rear drum brake.
with later models (rear disc brake) you should stay onroad ;-)

I also have a Laser on my 660. There's a very small dent in it and the caliper is still in place. I have an upgraded standard shock which is quite tough. Should I go on a desert tour like this ?

as one of Neil's bump-start team, I'd say you should absolutely not consider pistes until you have got clearance between the laser and caliper. when Neil's caliper broke off, it ripped through the side wall and inner tube. we had all (Neil, Martin and I) been stupid enough to ignore the small dent. modify the exhaust and come back safe.

as scarey as it would be, you'd do better to remove the caliper than letting it wreck your tyre/tube/wheel ...

At the VERY LEAST, I would modify the can with a big hammer, but my can has an indentation of about 20mm, so it is not just a couple of taps....

And another thing...Rich is absolutely right- better off removing the rear brake than risk the damage I suffered, although stopping town traffic can be fun! (sorry about the dents Rich)
Klaus - are there other systems that dont work off road on disc brake models?

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
