85 m.p.h. top end ?.

can't be right can it?.my 93 3tb seems to want to give more ,tho is struggling to do so :confused1: .no rev counter on this model, but it sounds like there are some rev's left .only changes are air box lid (made one as can't buy one) & produro exhaust .i also made these tank air scoops as again i could'nt buy any.

Thats faster than iv had out of my 2003 XT600E !! I flatline at 75mph (downhill) with 15/45 gearing and a race can.

Nice looking XT !!! My 91 XT didn't have a tach on it either just an ijiot lite. SO I found this lil gem >>>tach

It has a 1/2 second refresh rate which is good enough.I made a cheapazz bracket for the handlebars and use the lo beam terminal on the headlight for power.

[anti hijack] as far as your top speed 80 mph doesn't sound too bad. What is the sprocket tooth count?

85 mph would be about right in standard trim. If in doubt take it to your local dyno rolling road for testing and maybe carb set up. Was having problems with mine misfireing around 3k rpm. Mostly resolved by a dyno setup, new plug, air filter and cleaning out the float bowl.

Results after adjustment:
31.6hp @ 6098rpm
34ft-lbs @ 3483rpm

XT600e Performance.

OK. Here’s my experience of riding more than one or two XT600e’s. I’ve not had any problems at all with the cruising or top end speed considering the design, engine size and off road orientation of the bike.

This morning after a 172Km ride to work, (full touring trim and both panniers full), on all types of roads, here is my bikes ‘performance’ chart.



For reference its an XT600e is a 2003 model, approximately 15,000 Km, mechanically completely standard, with the exception of Metal Mule panniers (fully loaded) which of course do nothing for aerodynamics. One point of note here.... I never went above 5,500 rpm.

Cruising speed = 110 to 120Km/h (70 to 75mph).
Top speed = 145Km/h (90mph) – were I ‘chickened’ out, not the bike.



The speed readings were off my SatNav (TomTom Rider), not the speedo which reads about 7 to 10Km/h fast.

I suppose we must bear in mind that the XT600e is not a sports bike! And therefore should be riden within its capabilities.

it does, tho i owned a klr600 before & that would show 100m.p.h. on the clock .now apart from the kwak being water cooled there ain't that much differance (power wise it depnds on what you read so 45-50 b.h.p should give similar results.tho 36 ish quoted in this thread) . as i said before it feels like there is more to give:confused1: .

85 mph would indicate to me you are getting about 25 to 30 hp. Possibly marginally faster than a 500 Enfield but slower than a sports Velocette 500.
About the same as a 1949 500 Triumph speed twin but 10+ mph slower than teh 500 cc T100.
My 1985 bmw is rated at 50 hp and with me will run happily at any speed from 30mph to 100. It will go more.
it seems to be a good one, not at all fussy to set up, ticks over like a clock and has 160km showing on the odometer.

If your bike has cv carbs change the diaphragms, if it has fool injection you are on your own... Your air filter top.. can it depress and hinder air through the filter?

HP is far far from the be all and end all of final speed.

The XT makes about 45bhp but the primary drive and gearbox ratios are quite high. This gives the bike plenty of low grunt and a nice low rpm for "pootering".

Its a very low tuned engine. Its capable of producing far more power but then you wouldnt get 20+ years out of it like many people do.

got loads of low grunt & pottering power is good.so it seems this is how they are,i'm really enjoying my xt & this lack of top end speed isnt a problem to me now i know they are all the same .thanks barry.

With standard gearing, and a 130/90 x 17 tyre on the rear (both tyres were MT21 knobbys) i'm sure my 02 XT can quite easily pull 100mph.
I was in full off road gear, backpack on and leaning down over the tank. I saw the speedo indicate 155kph (my speedo seems to be accurate), then i chickened out and backed off, even though the bike was still pulling!
