cape york 2 up?
Right following a drunken conversation i've agreed to do cape york (top end of australia) with a pillion on my standard suspension XT 600, i have quite a lot of gear (55kg including panniers and racks) and the person comming is not exactly light (didnt ask her what she weighed but am guessing 70-75kg ish). I presume the old telegraph road is out but what is the state of the main unsealed road? Has any one done it two up on an xt or similar? Is it just a case of taking a bit more time about it? Or am i totally nuts, need to eat a little humble pie, stop thinking with the second brain and tell the girl that its not happening? Oh and to top it all off i should be leaving Townsville this comming monday morning (15 oct07) so i have to make the decision quick. Please your opinions and thoughts as i dont have a clue.
Thanks George

C'mon
Everything is possible. It's all between the ears. Added to that, if you really love each other you won't even notice the state of the road, you'll be floating.
On top of that, we're talking XT here, so go for it!

Dont you dare cancel it
I would seriously get an uprated rear spring. Spring and labour should cost less that £100 or $200 AUS

going for it
Thanks to Ted and Auke for the replys i've decided to go for it, if the worst comes to the worst then i can always ditch the bike and walk out of there, at least my two mates in the little bag of skin will be ok and still attached to my body.
Thanks George
Ps will let you know how it goes.

I don't want to rain on your parade but it's possible you won't walk out of the cape..It's hot, humid and a bloody long way from nowhere. (and we havn't mentioned the critters that would dearly like to bite you or worse eat you.
I do expect you'll get there 2 up but it will be a slow trip..
Ideally travel with at least 1 other bike.
What time of year are you intending on hitting the road?

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
