CDI fro another model

Hi, i have a Yamaha XT600 43F that I am building for flat tracking with no battery.

I got a CDI from my old TT350 and have tried to use it on the XT600.

Googled around and found that the "ignition advance values" from the different models are almost the same.
TT350 12 degree @1200rpm and 34 degree @5000rpm
XT600 12 degree @1200rpm and 36 degree @4500rpm


I have got it to start, but it runs really bad and with a lot of banging in the exhaust.
It sometimes also kickbacks really hard when I try to find the sweet spot. This has made my friend and me limping around for a week now

Anyone know if this is going to work out or not?
Could it be that I have connected the trigger coil wires wrong?

There is a local guy here that has a used one from a 87 XT600 IVJ but the price is a little stiff, 170€ and I don't know if that one would fit any better.

Don't know the specifics, but its clear that the timing is wrong - way advanced. Perhaps the mounting, or timing marks is different? You'll need a degree wheel and a timing light to find out what the timing REALLY is.
The 350 also advances "faster" and given that it's a smaller engine that probably revs higher, no surprise. That could be an issue unless you modify the engine a lot - in which case it could be a plus!

im planning to do some rounds of the italian amateur class flat track, so could be interesting to see what you are building and what solutions you found for tires and wheels..... link to pics?

but before you throw the towel, I would try to reverse the ign pickup wires, it could make a difference to the advance.



there are several aftermarket CDI, if you are in europe, ignitech.cz is a good source

transmic (link i sent ) sells DIY CDI kits.

Thanks Turboguzzi! Yea i’m gonna try that out and see what happens...I have a little hope it’s gonna work out fine!

I had a TT350 that i built for flat track a couple of years ago and last year i got my hands on a XT600 frame and engine. I swapped over most of the parts from the TT to the XT and now i only have to sort out the ignition and then i’m ready to go left!

I found a used 19 front 2.15 wheel from the local scrapyard and the rear wheel was built by Central Wheel Components in England. I have a 130 Dunlop DT3 on front and had the same rear last year. Now i got a new 140 Mitas FT tyre on the rear that i have not used yet. I can send some pictures later

neat DIY bike, will be asking you some questions....


been to Pete Boast flat track school in UK some years ago, then a road accident and broken tibia ^ fibula got in the way....


i also road race in the vintage class but always wanted to try FT.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love.
