Do I need a Cylinder Rebore ?
Hi,
My xte 600 just reached 105000 km.
So I dismantled the bike to rebuilt it. Front disc, fork spring, swing arm bearing, carb cleaning respray...etc.
I changed the timing chain and piston rings at 50000 km already, so i wonder if I need to get new piston a rebore or just new rings again?
Maybe that's a 200000 km job?

Damn.. those are great numbers!
My cam chain broke at around 30-32k km...my fault tho..
Well, If the bike isn't using too much oil, just make a compression test to check how good the piston rings are holding up.
If it's too low I'd recommend checking if you can change only the rings.
If all is good, just keep doing what you've been doing as it seems you're doing it right!

If the barrel & piston are in good condition just bung a new set of rings in.

Have someone meassure the cylinder with a correct tool. It can be sligtly out of round, you cant see or feel stuff like that.
But I think you're fine, I've got 95.000km on totally stock engine

Blimey those are truly HUGE mileage readings. Just goes to show just how durable these things are.
I'd say if it's running fine then carry onwards and upwards until it starts to complain (lose power or become lumpy or unresponsive).
Most important thing is Oil changes - don't neglect these at all. The more often you change the stuff the better for the engine. For high mileage bikes you should also change the oil filter at the same time (with lower mileage / pampered bikes it's often safe to get away with filter change every second oil fill). I pamper mine with 1,500 mile oil (and filter) changes and they are both sub 10K bikes, lol.
Great to know what these things are capable of doing...

If you still have it in bits, as Jens said check it against the wear limit figures. If not and its all back together, do a comp check against factory specs. does it blow smoke under power (hope not after the ring change)
Very impressed with the mileage figures by the way.

Hi All,
Thanks for you answers...
Well I thought of doing the compression test but after I took the engine off the frame!
it still going strong though, don't think I lost power or anything maybe smoking when starting, but it come from the head gasket leak.
The only reason I dismantled was to respray, derust the frame and rebuild fork and swing arm bearing and shocks.... stearing bearing all shot!
So maybe I'll carry on just changing the rings and gaskets...and see
And yes I'm suprised I'm still riding it got the bike almost new the main trouble were carb inlet, starter relay and that's it
I've never adjusted valves either , just regular oil change.
I may post pictures on the work in progress.

I will recommend you to referrer to the Service Manual where you will find instruction about how to measure the barrel and the piston to know if you need to rebore or not. For the piston you can use a good normal vernier calliper, for the cylinder you need an alesometer.
Any motorbike machine shop should be able to measure it and tell you if you need or not to rebore and till which piston/rings size, better if you provide from the manual the service limit sizes...
The compression test only will tell you if you have a compression leak that can come from the wear on the rings, valves or gasket (read the manual about this too)
