First new bike! Some kind of frankenstein.. HELP!! :)

So basically i'm a new guy to the whole motorcycle world... and what would be a better start than buying a bike, non operational, and not even getting exactly the bike you bought...
I could be pissed!
But am actually excited i want to learn about it, how to fix it... basically everything i can....

So i am asking you, my whole new familiy to give me a hand
So maybe some day this lady can drive again

Eough of the sweet talk!

So far i figured that i have 1vj frame...
On that frame is 3aj motor...
I also got plasticks and headlights from 3aj which dont fit on 1vj... about taillights i'm not sure...
I think the rear brakes arent original..
Other than that i'm not sure.

I drove the bike a couple of times... first time it started with a starter spray....
Then i got it home them it didnt start right away... so i noticed it flushes with gasoline the spark plug.. so i cleaned it...also the gas tank was leaking so i improvised another just for repairs... somehow it went for a ride but everytime it turned of it had problems getting it to work again...

Oh yeah and of course wiring is shit so i have to do it kickstarter way and my leg is already good for vacation...

So spark is good suposedly... compression is also good suposedly...
I'm a total noob, definitely, and today i will try to check the carburetor with the company of a friend of mine who is less if a noob.

If anyone has any suggestion or thoughts you are MORE than welcome....

Lets get this thing back on the road!!!

how much you paid for it? (in euros)


the first motorcycle I got in 1979 was a 40 year old, British Army, WWII Ariel 350, so this is almost like a new one....

And also one question if you know maybe.... i'm taking the carb apart and the primary jet needle there are 5 grooves with a washer of sorts around one of then... do you know in which groove it should be?

Now, let me tell you a little story i read in "classic bike" magazine, some 40 years ago, when i was just starting, it is still true....


to restore a bike you need three elements

1. skills, 2. time, 3. money.
Sounds like you have a lot of time,

Not so sure about your money and technical skills, hope you have them too..



you can compensate a bit if you are lacking an element with the other two, but not completely



I am afraid that this bike will require A LOT of money and skills to put right and eventually, it will be cheaper for you to buy a good running bike. in italy a decent XT600 is 1500 euro. You will easily spend another 700 just fixing yours...



I think this is a good bike to keep as a spares bike and learn how to work on it, but from the condition I see, it will be a very big and expensive effort to make it run right.


As for the needle, if its the one from the slide carburator (left), then i would leave it where it is now.



First, download the manual, all the specs (also for the carbuator) are there.

IVJ`s had drum brakes, that`s got a 3AJ rear end (disc).

Whats the engine number? (right hand side behind exhaust on the block) 1VJ or 3AJ?

Well, I thought that from the appalling condition of the bike, it was pretty obvious written tongue in cheek

There is so much work to do there, specially for a total beginner, that i really feel for our new friend....

I have some thinking to do now...

I have the manual, i took apart the carb and reassembled it and it still doesnt start... is it possible that it doesnt because of the float? Or the float doesnt have such a strong effect on starting?
Alsi the adjusting jet? Or maybe decompressor? Can either of these three prevent it completly from starting?
I was till 4 am in the garage yesterday...

I have time, knowledge and money as yoi figured not so much....

Bummer... aaa!!!!

Not talking about the casting number im talking about the one that is STAMPED in to the block, it will start with either 1VJ or 3AJ followed by a bunch of numbers.

If you don`t have any paperwork or registration & you are able to return it, return it.

I'm dissapointed... if i could just get it to start... because it ran already..

You know it runs, because you have heard it. So you know it has spark and compression. Bikes that stand idle for a long time always have carb problems unless they were drained. Are the carbs right for the engine that is fitted, and are they absolutely clean (all the jets, fuelways, any internal filters...)? Also, check the cam timing - this can make it hard to start, but I think the carbs are your problem.
If the starter spins when you attach 12v directly to it, you can bodge a system to bypass all the other switchgear (Use thick wire!) and touch one end of a cable to the battery. Be careful - it will spark, you need to be firm for a good contact, and don't have any open fuel cans close by!
(You have checked the cutout switch on the handlebars is in the "run" position??)


If you fancy a challenge, keep going, if not, try to return it. If all the parts are there, time will be your biggest investment!

making that bike run well again is going to take a big effort as you start to understand....



if at the end of months of work and even more euros, you will end up with a bike that has no papers and can only be used in empty fields, I would very strongly suggest to you to take it to the seller and try to get your money back.



Im pretty sure you can get a better deal for 700 - 1000 euro, a bike that has been in normal use and that you will enjoy on the road rather than just struggle in the garage for a long time.


@moosproof - that thing is kickstart only, no starter.....also disagree that it's solvable mainly with time, IMHO you are misleading the guy
