To answer your questions, Yes and Yes!
As you already know, the foam filter is held in shape by a mesh frame. All you have to do is pull the foam filter over the frame and then insert it into the airbox exactly as you would install the original paper type filter. It takes no more than 20 seconds or so.
Carrying a spare filter (without a frame) would be a great idea if you plan on doing any sort of long distance dirt riding. It will fold down to practically nothing, so you don't need to worry about it taking up much space.
The kit also comes with a pre-filter. It goes in place of the duct that sits on top of your airbox (under the seat) and faces backwards. 4 screws to remove the duct and then the prefilter (which has a moulded rubber surround) just slots into place. The pre-filter should also be oiled. It's there to filter out the big chunks before the main filter inside the airbox.
