GS 500 wheels on a 90's XT?
As per the title, ive seen mention of here about fitting Suzuki GS 500 wheels onto the XT 600 and have seen a pic of it on here but the bike in qustion had different calipers. Does anyone know if the GS wheels are a straight fit and can they use the original calipers?

gs wheels have a different axle sizes to the xt and spacers would need to be made and the brake disks also are different sizes, front calipers mount on different sides too.
the rear has a different sprocket offset and the xt swingarm is not very wide and might give some clearance issues

Ah well thats that idea out of the window then!
Are there any cast road wheels that would be a straight swap? or any 18" or 17" wheels for that matter!

its not impossible to do with the gs wheels just needs some work.

Unfortunatly I dont have the tools neccesary (or probably the skills for that matter!)to make up spacers, brackets for calipers or any of the other fabrication work that would probably be required which was why I was looking for an easy option to getting smaller wheels with proper road tyres (intending on using the bike for commuting once its finished) instead of the big nobblies that are currently on it!
This may be a really stupid idea but would it be possible to take an 18" rear rim from an XT600 and lace it to a front hub to give an 18" front wheel? Not sure about width etc?

Could you not just buy more road biased tyres for it or are you after the super moto look ?

I was thinking along the lines of supermoto as I think they look really good but I think the cost is going to be prohibitive so looks like ill just have to settle for road tyres on my existing rims!

for the price of a decent set of gs wheels plus a few tokens you could get the xt hubs re laced with 17" rims if you really want a a super moto
the restrictions are in tyre sizes you might only get a 150 in the rear with the standard swing arm set up, which may limit tyre choice but unless you are on the track i dont see a problem with that i just swapped a knackered 160 for the 150 i had on my old sumo wheels and even though my new yzf wheels take a 160 easy it wont have any affect on what my limited skills can doo
ok my xt600e supermoto got a little out of control build wise but i still did it on a limited budget with not the best tools available so take a good look at whats available before giving up

Think ill definatly look into the option you mentioned of the 17" rims laced to the xt hubs. Do you by any chance know what the specs are for the rims i should be looking for e.g width, number of spokes etc or are they all pretty much the same?
By the way im holding you completely responsible for me thinking about doing this as it was seeing the pics in your supermoto thread that got me started on the idea!!

my original rims set up had a 3.00 on the front and a 3.50 rim in the rear, i think you might be able to get a 4.00 in the rear.
remember the xt swingarm is not very wide so a 150 tyre is probably going to be your max anyway which will sit nicely on a 4.00 rim, i had a 150/60 17 on a 3.50 rim and it was fine
use a good wheel builder they usually have to drill the spoke holes at the correct angle for the hub
nice to see i've inspired you but i will not be held responsible for the mental anguish, cuts/bruises, empty wallet, swearing and insanity which will happen as soon as you start worrking on the bike
you will have a big grin on ya face when its done though

ha ha, already had most of those things over the winter as the work ive done so far has involved a complete strip down to replace the badly damaged frame (took me almost a year to find a replacement frame), new head stock bearings, strip and clean the carbs, replacing 3 snapped exhaust studs and having to make up a serviceable wiring loom from 2 chopped up / damaged looms i bought from ebay as the bike had no wiring at all when i bought it! .
Have never actually ridden the bike since I bought it as a stolen recovered non runner last year and have probably spent way more on it to date than I would ever get back to but have now got the bike running and almost back together and have (mostly) enjoyed the process but really fancy a supermoto so think i will look into rims and hopefully get it registered and on the road for spring!

mine was in a simlar state for quite a while due to all the other comitments i'd got on.
i tried to start it on sunday and the battery was flat
i fitted a kick start for emergencies so thought i'd give it a try with the kick but i never fitted the decompressor
i took a few attempts to get the knack of kicking a big single without a decompresion lever but she fired up dead easy so if you want to add a kick start too its not necessary to add the decomp kit
cos i've hidden the battery on mine it looks like its kick only but i do luv the electric start

I was actually contemplating fitting a kick start just as a back up but think ill concentrate on the other stuff first. I did notice that your battery wasnt visible, where did you relocate it, or is it just covered?
I noticed that there are what look like fixing holes on the bottom of the left hand fairing and also on the frame below the battery, i take it there should be some sort of cover over the battery? mine has the battery visible with the side panel on and it just doesnt look right!

the battery is hidden under the seat cos i got rid of the original airbox which was a heavy waste of space over 1.5kg to put air in
the side panel on mine will be altered later to give a cleaner look the original panel has another piece attached to cover the battery it basicly fills the v in the frame on that side your batttery should not be exposed at all when the side panel is on

yeah thats what i figured about the panel, looks like that bit is missing on mine. Ah well just have to try and make something up to cover the battery up.
I take it your just running cone filters directly onto the carbs? does it have any effect on the running without the airbox?
