10,2v doesnt seem toooooo low of a voltagedrop to be a problem.....at least on paper, so thanks for the real life example

Sounds normal to me too. But dead cell batteries can still give good voltage but not provide the amps !!!!!

Remember, as soon as the cdi sees less than 11.4v , it shuts the spark off.

Hi guys,
An update. I took the motorcycle to an official Yamaha dealer (up to you if you believe them, but I'd like to think they are somewhat trustworthy)
After half an hour of diagnosis they said it was the starter motor. (£240 + VAT)
3 working days later the part arrived and they installed it (1 hour labour)
My total bill was £409 including parts and labour. Unfortunately it seems like it was the most expensive component, as some of the tests indicated.
Thank you very much to everyone for your contributions,
It pains me how high the bill was, but the good news is that the bike now starts first time, and I've ridden it to the football, for dinner, and to work!
So far so good.

Firstly, they could of repaired it with a bush kit instead of selling you a new one. Probably.
Secondly, you can buy a second hand starter motor for about £40 and it takes about 20 minutes to fit and is REALLY easy.
Or you could have bought a whole bike for an extra £500
However, it's done now....

Sadly it seems to be the case with a lot of garages . Replace with new rather than repair. Glad its sorted now anyway.

Hope you got the old one with you back, or else i would contact them and get it. You can fix and sell or just sell as is.

Sure it was a bit expensive but it is now fixed and done with. You cannot expect a shop to stay in business if they don't make a profit. They were there when he needed them...

There is that I suppose.. Motorcycling used to be a poor mans game. Now its far more expensive than car ownership.
I can get a brand new starter for my van for £80.
New caliper is £70. A motorcycle caliper is £250 !!
Economies of scale and all that but there is a lot of leisure activity tax on it too...

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
