Rebuild? Which engine? Options please

Hi all,

Not been on here for some time now but i'm itching to get the tenere back on the road so would appreciate your opinions.

I have an 86 Ivj, very original and generally tidy. However, the 5th gear whines like an air raid siren, the crank rumbles like my stomach half an hour before dinner and the piston slaps about like a sausage in a corridor, oh and the head and barrel are determined to part company too! All in all a very tired motor.
What should I do?
1. Rebuild this motor completely.
2. Strip, inspect and possibly fit a "believed to be good" 3AJ motor that I have. As well as transplanting the kickstarter from my motor.
3. Source a complete running motor from a later bike.

Money is of course a serious consideration, very keen to keep the costs down as much as possible.

Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem on my 600e and I totaly stripped ,replaced 5th gear and rebuilt it,that way you know your bike engine inside out and know it will be good for another 70,000 kms......if you have a little technical ability you can do it. The biggest thing is the fear.....just do it! if you throw another engine in you don,t know the condition its in or the reliability factor. With a personally rebuilt engine you have complete confidence in it. If you get stuck with anything there are plenty of people here that are more than willing to help you....as I found out too

Hi. I agree rebuild what you have for all the same reasons if the rest of the bike warrants the cost of an engine rebuild. To state the obvious shop around but I think your in the right country for parts and help. Most of the parts I source for my bike come out of the US or England as even with postage new and second hand parts are cheaper than buying in Australia. Good luck
Ernie.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
