struggle starting

Hi guys. Xt600e 92. 26k. Starting takes ages and while trying it bangs a few times..twice its ran the battery flat. What could be wrong...left it a half hour then tried it again..it started no trouble at all. Took it a couple o miles. But i have it on trickle charge just now...it has a loud can on it. Could the backfire be because of the loud can..ive ran it with the can on it before. But till yesterday the bike had laid up 6 weeks..any thoughts

You may have an air leak on the intake boots, this makes a lean mixture that can backfire. Intake boots are famous for getting hard and can leak air.

I drained my carb bowl. Took thd plug out checked it out. The plug was old an sooty black..it sparked intermitantly with white spark...changed the plug..i then hsd a fine blue spark..screwd it in..gassed up the carb an it started first button..before i attacked all this. I had tried again to start it..an it backfired real loud..now a happy bunny...cheers guys.

As I understand it, either
A. You are not named "Steve" (it's possible that only you know this)

B. You are the wrong "Steve" for the PM

ps
Black sooty plug = running rich, burning too much fuel for the O2 available makes the soot.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
