variation on starter relay theme

hi

i had the classic xt stuck relay problem at the start of this year...this was down to a slightly low battery and perhaps dodgy relay. it settled down in april and had been very reliable since until last week. i was riding it and the engine became unresponsive and erratic, i thought i must be down on fuel (which i was a bit) so switched it to reserve the engine was still unresponsive and wouldn't rev over its lumpy tickover. i turned the fuel tap and then the engine cut out with a bit of a bang and i lost electrics. At this point i pushed it home. next day i changed the blown fuse and started it up. At this point the engine and starter motor caught but the starter motor wouldn't stop. i had to disconnect the battery of course. i thought my relay had finally had it so ordered another one which came today. fitted this and on connection to the battery all was looking good as it connected without sparking at the battery terminals and the starter didn't start immediately. however when i turned the ignition on and pressed the starter button the engine and starter caught but the starter wouldn't stop. had to disconnect again.

i have just checked the switch, and that seems to switch on and off ok.

any ideas?

Fit a new battery & an OEM relay & you should be OK, i would also service the starter motor (clean & fit new brush kit).

I'd also take apart the starter button switch , clean and fill it with dielectric grease to make sure it isn't welding itself together .Quite possible the repeated relay fault did something to the starter itself .

Thank you for your suggestions. Just before I ordered some OEM parts I cleaned some contacts in the connection block which attaches to the relay, disconnected the Oxford heated grips and a USB accessory port and reconnected the year old battery. Started up fine, and no starter motor over run. Don't know if it's sorted but will ride hopefully and will order those bits if it isn't.

Thanks again

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
