what sprockets to have

Hi anybody know what size sprockets are fitted on a xt600e k reg I've just bought the bike and had my first outing on it at the weekend and following my brother down the roads he was sat comfortable in top gear sat about 45/50 mph I was having to knock mine down to 3rd so it wasn't chugging behind him I've got a 40 tooth on the back and think it's a 15 on the front can anyone recommend what I should have on it for a bit more bottom end for off road use but not wanting to lose to much when I'm on the road back home. I run 15/45 think its good for offroad and street, i dont ride 150km/t long distance with this bike.

Xt600e...or k? E-models doesnt have gearbox issues.

15/45 is stock on E-models.

Try a 14 up front, its an easy and cheap swap.

"K reg" in the UK means a 1992 year of first registration.
So it's a 1992 model, or close to it.

15/45 is standard if I remember correctly.

I tried as low as 15/42 and the bike didn't have the power to pull it.

15/44 is the lowest I'd go and just accept that it's not meant to be an 80mph machine

When I first got my Enfield a few years back, unbeknown to me the PO had fitted a one tooth higher gearbox sprocket. I disliked it at first as if it was slightly up hill or a headwind I would be down into fourth and spent a considerable portion of my riding time in Fourth. I resolved to go down a tooth as it was obviously overgeared. Luckily I counted the teeth. So now back to standard gearing. I also fooled the electronic ignition to not run too far advanced. I now have more power and can accelerate uphill in fifth. the MPG hasn't moved in a any measurable way. still does 95mpg or 100 miles to 5 litres which is easier to work out. A 22 litre tank means I don't need to stop for fuel more than once a day.

So don't be fooled by the craze to over gear. The bike might cruise 3-5% slower but you will make more miles per day and be more relaxed at the end of it.

I have a 2000 xt600e. I ride it on and off road, but keep under 100 km/h. It is a naked dual sport after all.

Stock (15/45) is a bit high off road.

I tried 14/47, it was great off road but did not work on the blacktop. Fine around town though.

Now I run 15/47. It is fine on the blacktop, 90-100 km is ok and it is not to bad off road. It is better than stock around town, the bike feels more lively and responsive.
