Just bought a TTR600RE
I've just picked up a 2003 model with 9000 miles.
Spill your guys. What's to know about these ?
Ive had XT600s but this is my first TTR.
I know the shocks off the kickstart model are better but I'll try out the stock ones first.
I'm intending on rising this to Mongolia and selling it in Ulaan Bator.
I'm thinking an Acerbis tank, bash plate and home made luggage racks is all I'll need.

+ some kind of screen and a sheep skin over the seat.
Hand guards if not fitted already.

I did a lot of trails on a tt600e Belgrade yours is the next model up, I find them as good as the xt's in most respects, forks springs upgraded, suspension better, the rake is a little longer better for the roads that's why they turn them into a supermoto still ok for what you want to do, brakes upgraded.
I'll de very surprised if the speedo is working the drive on the hub are nylon and they don't last long, no replacements available.
There's a friend selling a 1997 kick start only £900 if you know any one interested, I can post a picture if needed.
If I remember the tank has about 120-140 miles in it, so yes bigger tank

Good call.
I had the same issue with my 2001 model - I couldn't find a speedo drive cable to fit that bike.
I guess some of these new fangled electronic thingies (vapor??) are a potential replecement.

Had anyone tried using the older XT speedo drives? I imagine the axle is bigger on the TTR , I have bored on drive out to 17mm to use on one USD swap, changes in wheel bearings can bring the axle size down to 17 if the TTR is bigger yet. An axle will need to be made then. DRZ400(or DR650SE) front wheel can be used with it's drive as another option, spacer will possible need to be made but then a person can keep the oem speedometer.

Best option is to get rid of the speedo drive entirely and replace it with standard spacer.
I think that's what I'll do.
Then use a digital magnetic/pickup style speedo. Trailtech are nice at around £70. Even a £10 bicycle one will work though.

I seem to recall that the XT drive cable is too short anyway.
Certainly, local spares folks based in the UK couldn't get me a drive for the TTR.
Also, the OEM speedo is not of great quality - at one time I had two of them; again, I can't recall exactly why I decided to buy a second owner spare but it may have been because the drive cable inside had also failed.

Are you good with the 9K mileage in 12 years?
Separately, the more I recall it, the more I think the whole of the speedo system, for the kicker TTR600 anyway, is a pile of junk.
IIRC, the innards of the speedo head also consist of gears made of nylon.

2004 Yamaha Tt600Re for sale in Cornwall England
We had the TTR600 bike here (OFF ROAD ONLY model). But one could make it street legal in those years (more difficult now).
Quite a few guys I knew rode TTR's in the early-mid 90's in Enduros and did well.
I understand you don't want to spend a fortune on prep ... but surly you'll need more comfortable seat? Hope you can post up some pics so we can follow your build/prep. Good luck with it ....  :

hi heres a pic of a worn gear ,it turns against a metal cylindrical gear (which is turned by the speedo cable) that wears the middle of the plastic gear which you can see in the pic ,has happened to me and i think everyone ive spoken to with a tt600r/re ,not a question of if but when, steve

You're on the right track Ted, skip the stock Speedo set up. Go electronic/Digital.
More accurate, multi trip meters, run time, clock and a bunch more features.
Just keep the battery fresh and route the pick up wire carefully and all good. The good ones are even waterproof.

Not sure I believe it... The bike looks in good nick though.
A lot of people sit on bikes and only ride them twice a year though.
Or just a couple of trail rides a year.
We'll see when it gets here..

The TTR600 is fully road legal in UK/Europe.
Then along came the RE model to make it a bit more civilised.
