XT600E Sputter at higher rpm
Good morning all,

I feel like a chump registering on the forum just to ask a question, but as a new xt600e owner i really don't know what else to do

Recently i was gifted a 2001 XT600E in parts from a family member that took it apart a few years ago to clean up, remove any rust and repaint.
The bike went together pretty easily and ran like a champ.

After buttoning everything up and assembling the airbox however the bike stutters at higher RPM's, and when in gear and driving even at a bit lower RPM's.
Taking the air filter out seemed to remedy the problem, so i ordered a new one as the filter was pretty filthy. But i'm sad to say the problem remains.

If anyone has an idea of what the problem is i would be very grateful

tl;dr
XT600E stutters at rpm with air filter, runs good without.

So the bike idles fine and is ok at low speeds/ throttle? I would start with the basics....If you havnt already, remove carb and clean pilot jet/ main jets/ emulsion tubes and remove fuel bowl float needle & seat. Check the tiny filter on the seat inlet is clean after have removed it. Check the fuel bowl level setting once its all back together and prior to reinstalling into bike. Install a fresh plug. Retest.

If it's stuttering, and the problem goes away when the airfilter is removed, and it's not resolved with a new airfilter, it means it's running too rich.
I had the same problem on my GPZ900.

Open carbs and check the main jet size and fuel bowl float height.

Thanks for the input.
I'll pull the carb off tonight see if there are any anomalies.

The jet was recently replaced with the same size already in it due to it breaking off. That was a #180.

The yamaha manual states there should be #130 jet, that seems like a big jump though.

#180 is way too big, unless maybe you're running open air pods and new headers + exhaust etc.

If you have the stock airbox/filter go back to #130. Maybe if you have a more flowing exhaust you might get 135.

I think i know what happened..

Looks like we misread the text on the jet and ordered a 180 instead of a 130
The endpiece of the muffler fell out and i do like the little bit more noise. Would you say a 135 jet would be necessary?

I think 135 should be good. In my experience with carbed bikes, all of them liked stock+5 or +10 with an open can. Over here I my local shop allows me to trade main jets, sometimes for free or for 2,50 per jet.

Stock mainjets are plenty rich, even for a slightly modified bike.
Theres no need to go up in size.

I haven't got any jetting experience with the XT600 specifically so listen to this guy go 130 then

Pulled the carb off. Everything was nice and clean.
Ordered the jet, should be here next week. Ill close up the thread once its fixed.
