One day we became bored and within five months we had sold our house and furniture, left our jobs and started a trip around the world.

After a wonderful big send off at the HUBB UK event 2013 we started our around the world trip rather unprepared. We have so far been on the roads for 16 months and covered 22 countries such as Russia, Mongolia, Myanmar, India, Alaska etc., and are now heading towards Mexico and the whole way down to Ushuaia in Argentina. After we have done this we have 'only' Africa to cross until we are back in the UK or Sweden. We are the 'living' proof that you actually can ride in countries such as Mongolia without any off road experience whatsoever, though it might be tough.

We like to describe central Baja as a combination of the Galapagos Islands and Namibia that's only a day and a half's ride from San Diego. Its natural beauty and the opportunities for exploration by land, sea and air are endless. Baja has always been friendly to tourists and expats, and tourists flock to the northern and southern ends of the peninsula. But it's the central area between the Sea of Cortez and Scorpion Bay on the Pacific that calls to us, as it retains the original feel of old Baja.

Further south we bump along arroyos and oasis to the 7000-year old San Borjitas cave paintings. Carla King is an adventure travel author who has specialized in solo explorations of the world on a series of cranky indigenous motorcycles. Nicole's adventurous spirit was ignited at a young age through backpacking the length of the Sierras as a teenager. We are a motorcycling family of 3 on 2 BMW motorcycles. We've been riding as a family since our son, Jack, was 5 years old. Now, 7 years later, we've made the decision to sell the house, flee the usual, and head to South America.

This was a choice we made as a family, knowing that if we didn't do it now, then when? Some changes have been easier than expected, some a bit more of a challenge. Robert Thode Cuba: The Forbidden Island

Citizens of the USA have, and are, restricted in their travel to Cuba.  To travel, (legally), in Cuba US citizens must be part of a “people to People” tour.  Moto Discovery is the only motorcycle tour company currently licensed to provide motorcycle tours to Cuba.  This was not my normal method of travel, but I was not disappointed, Cuba is a fascinating place, a beautiful land full of warm and friendly people. 

We all look at things a little differently as we travel. I tend to look at the economic and political systems as well as natural resources industries. My preconceived opinions about the socialist economic system being a failure were confirmed but I found some things worked very well, health care, education, racial integration and a sense of community were impressive.

The people of Cuba were wonderful and the best way to travel Cuba is on a Harley.  Political and economic structure is changing rapidly, some will be for the better, some maybe not.

During our trip, we wild camped along the coast of Turkey, in abandoned campgrounds in the Czech Republic and on the streets of Israel. We have stayed with complete strangers, from Nepal to Hungary, and everywhere in-between. I have even slept on the top of a zamboni storage shed in Canada...

Some of these moments have become the highlights of our trip! This is the vulnerability that you must, and will have during your adventures. It's what makes you approachable. It's what will, in the end, make your trip.

You will need to sleep somewhere, so make the most of it and learn how to accept hospitality and how to give friendliness. We have both received and given hospitality to travelers.

Learn the art of packing light and multi-purposing your gear. Traveling is about freedom, not lugging around a ball and chain of gear.

In 2012, my wife and I wrapped up our RTW motorcycle trip. We rode two-up on a KTM 640 Adv. These are not big bikes, so we had to be very mindful of what we were bringing.

I will explain how to choose your luggage, clothing, camping and kitchen gear for light weight travel. I will also explain how to multi-purpose your gear, sleep in freezing temps with a lightweight sleeping bag, wash your clothes with solar power, keep your luggage containers organized and much more.

Bringing the wrong gear will stress you our and stress-fracture your subframe, so choose wisely.

David: Like many, I am addicted to travel. Motorcycles, backpacks and Westfalia Campers are all a means to an end. In 2012, my wife and I finished our RTW trip on our trusty KTM 640 Adv - two up.

When traveling long distances via motorcycle, your bike sometimes breaks. When that distance is backcountry and off-pavement, those breakdowns become more frequent and carry higher consequences.

This isn't just a tool kit ingredients seminar! We'll identify the typical mechanical breakdowns dualsport riders often encounter and their causes. We'll have a little slideshow showing examples of trailside breakdowns and creative temporary fixes that got the rider back to town. After we've explained how to use all these tools and supplies, we'll show samples of shop tools and trail tools, and show how the size, functionality, and packability of both differ. We'll hand out a suggested tool packing list.

Electrical accessory wiring 101 - how to add electronics to your bike without setting it on fire

It all started innocently enough. You bought a battery charger and attached the hookup wire to your battery terminals. Then came the heated grips. Then the GPS, the horn, the auxiliary lights, the heated clothing, and the 12-volt blender. Now you're popping fuses all the time and only half the gadgets work. We'll get you fixed up!

Carla Oliva Self-Care On The Road - Self-care techniques to make your trip more enjoyable!

The purpose of this presentation is to explore self-care techniques for on the road motorcycle travelers. Presenter will talk over most common aches and pains from riding for long hours and how riders can prevent or reduce them. Participants will learn the use of simple self-care solutions to maintain general good health and wellness while traveling. Self-care tips will vary from body work techniques such as: self-massage, hydrotherapy, stretches, strengthening exercises and proper body mechanics during riding.

Carla has over 15 years of experience in the fitness industry. Her own history of orthopedic injuries influence how she sees and teaches movement: with great sympathy to those with injuries.

Carla strongly believes that anyone can benefit from movement and massage therapy, she strives on educating her clients on how movement can assist them in achieving their fitness goals and leading them into improved body awareness. She enjoys 2up motorcycle riding with her husband. Their longest trip was from Philadelphia, PA to Anchorage, AL.

Meditation that Doesn't Suck

Meditation has many benefits – health, being fully present, creativity, undistractable attention – but one size doesn't fit all!

We all choose our ride and love our steed – because it's perfect for us. Other than playful brand-snobbery, we know every rider will find their perfect bike, and we celebrate that it's perfect for them.

Meditation has as many styles of "ride" as there are types of bike, with as many customizations and farkles, too. Take this time to test-ride some different models and actually experience what fits for you. Or what fits you in different times and situations: visualization, focus meditation, sound, contemplation, insight meditation, movement… we'll do a couple minutes of each.

Bill Ellison Motorcycle Recovery Systems - Demonstration and hands-on presentation of setting up simple to complex rope systems to get your bike back up on the road.

What if you have the misfortune of having your bike end up at the bottom of a ditch, 20 ft. off the road? How are you going to get it back up on the road and on your way again? This presentation will give you some techniques on how you can recover your bike.

Beginning with basic equipment, we will demonstrate different rope systems following the KISS Principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid!). The smaller the number of riders in your party, the more you may need to think about carrying some specialized equipment to enable you to set up mechanical advantage systems to double and triple your pulling power.

Craig Vetter 50 Years of Motorcycle Design - The fun projects I have been involved with

In 1965 Craig graduated with a degree in Industrial Designer from the University of Illinois. Vetter never took a normal job. He simply designed the things that he wanted, made them and sold them. His work in life has always been "design driven" as opposed to "financially driven" or "marketing driven".

It turns out that the things Craig wanted, others wanted, too. His Windjammer fairing and saddlebags of the 70s created the modern touring motorcycle. By 1977, Vetter had factories in Illinois and California, employing over five hundred people, and had grown to be second in size to Harley-Davidson. Vetter has been awarded over twenty US patents and /or trademarks.

Craig's "Vetter Rocket 3" design of 1969 became the Triumph Hurricane of 1973 and was selected for display in the Guggenheim Museum's "Art of the Motorcycle". Bike Magazine named the Hurricane as one of the "100 best motorcycle designs ever". Other Vetter motorcycle designs include the Bonneville TT, Terraplane sidecar and the Mystery Ship. Vetter scooter designs include the Defiant and Torpedo and a series of Streamliners.

Today, every motorcycle manufacturer features at least one machine in its lineup that is substantially derived from Craig's inventions.

Motorcycle Streamlining - How to ride better and get 100 mpg

In 1980, in an effort to learn what the upper limits of efficient transportation might be at real highway speeds, Craig hosted the international "Craig Vetter Fuel Economy Runs" in California. Driving a course from San Luis Obispo through Big Sur to Monterey, the winning mileage went from 98 mpg in 1980 to 470 mpg in 1985.

One of the winning Vetter machines is on permanent display at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.

Currently, Craig is designing and developing true streamlining for high mileage, street legal vehicles in an attempt to help to reduce our consumption of energy. In addition, he hosts a series of Vetter Fuel Economy Challenges.

In 1999, the American Motorcyclist Association inducted Craig into the "Motorcycle Hall of Fame. " Today, the Museum features a permanent display of his work.

We often talk about what we'd do if we happened upon the scene of a wreck involving another motorcyclist. But what if that motorcyclist is you and you are riding alone out in the middle of nowhere? After a three day 1600 mile solo ride around Northern California, and only 28 miles from home, something terrible happened, but to this day, no one knows what. For hours Wynne laid out on the ground before someone found her. This is the story of that ride home.

Single, over 55 and riding alone: using common sense and technology to make your solo long distance ride safer

Do people really know before participating in an inherently risky activity what the full risks are? Are those scrapes and dents on your bike there because the motorcycle malfunctioned, or more likely because of decisions you made-assessing a risk-then doing it anyway.

If it were not for our dreams, love of riding, plain naiveté or denial of risk-gut fear, our ancestor's genetic gift of self-protection developed over thousands of years, would keep most of us home.

What influences us to make the decisions we do about where we ride? How do external environmental factors play a part in our decision-making process and our ability to assess personal risk-from selecting the motorcycle we ride on a particular trip to taking that ride on an unknown dirt road? Where's the best place to keep your SPOT or cell phone?

Twenty-five years ago, Wynne was chairperson of a large non-profit's first national committee on creating a domestic insurance policy that would help protect it from lawsuits directly related to the outdoor activities it promoted. What they discovered was that though people 'knew' an activity was dangerous, they did it anyway, then f they were hurt, sued the provider of services. It was the dawn of personal injury lawsuits, liability waivers and disclaimers.

I prepared or should I say over-prepared down to infinite detail, best laid plans and all that!! It was very apparent to me really quickly that not all big adventurers are that well prepared and others are left totally dependent on good fortune or maybe the help of others. So many what if's can blow all that.

I did a big trip up into Canada, then a trip to Texas and thought I was ready to do a RTW, man did I still have a lot to learn. I am really good mechanically, ok on electrics and great with people but my learning curve was huge when the planning and actual trip began.

A big part of my story is how a group of 7 turns into a group of 1 in 3 days, this might happen to you too so maybe you can learn from some of my experiences.

We had a plan that lasted only a few days and I was all alone in Siberia when I had promised my wife that we had this fantastic group effort all arranged, safety, medical issues etc. no problem. I am resourceful but when I finally had to tell Mrs Nesbitt that I was alone I knew the outcome.

I am almost 63 years young, fit and active and very adventurous. I have traveled extensively in the US and Canada and did a RTW trip 2010, starting with a group of 7 and shortly finding myself alone in Siberia. The story gets better from there... I have a strong leaning toward helping newbies plan and get started on their travels.

This hands on demonstration will show what to pack to be comfortable camping from your adventure bike. It will discuss the pitfalls of over loading and unbalanced loading on the stability and handing of the bike. From the many iterations of my motorcycle kit, I will show how to pack lighter, smaller and more efficiently while taking enough to eat well, keep dry, and enjoy the riding experience.

Mike has been adventure motorcycle traveling for the past 8 years and logged over 150k miles. Destinations included Alaska, Canada and Baja. Last year he traveled 30k miles completing two trips to the east coast from California, primarily tent camping.
