Dull insurance.....
Hi Everyone, I'm Mouse, A newbie from Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk , UK.
Hoping someone will feel my pain and be able to help!!.
So, I've prepped up my Defender for a northern Scandinavian trip next year..
I've tried to use quality gear where I can, and as a result the thing is worth more than retail value of the base vehicle..You probably know where this is going .
I CANNOT find anyone to insure me on an agreed value without imposing a mileage restriction, Best I've had is 8000 miles, Which wont cover my annual mileage.
I'm sure someone on here has had to navigate this before.
ANY suggestions greatly appreciated!!
Regards all, Mouse

I'm presuming you've tried Adrian Flux insurance (who specialise in rare/imported/modified and other 'hard' to insure vehicles) - if not, at least give them a call and see if they can offer you a policy with a less restrictive mileage allowance.
fwiw. though, I think with any modified overland vehicle or bike, you're kind of having to accept a degree of risk if you're embarking on a RTW style trip... As long as you're covered/protected from a third party claim (and primarily if you injure another party who requires serious medical treatment and/or death), then your 'worldy goods' are very much secondary.
You can probably insure individual [expensive] personal items - typically electronics and AV stuff - separately to mitigate some of any theft loss, but the vehicle itself, plus your camping/recovery equipment is just something you're going to have to accept, and endeavour to limit the chance of theft or damage.
If it's any consolation, generally speaking Scandinavians are not thieving scallys - so unless you actually damage your vehicle/equipment yourself, there ought to be little need to actually make an insurance claim on your own policy... I'd not worry too much about it and just focus on enjoying your trip.

I was going to say - in Scandinavia specifically, the probability of your stuff being stolen multiplied by the value of the stuff may turn out to be cheaper than a specialist insurance premium (in the UK in particular) - and luggage might be covered by regular travel insurance...
It's the same as the recent question on here about roadside breakdown coverage for a long cross-Europe trip: worth having if it's cheap, but at some point you have to consider that calling a towtruck and paying out of pocket is not THAT expensive, and amortized over the ten years in which you will need to do it once, it's cheaper than the premium!

If 8000 miles would cover your trip, you could start a new annual policy before your trip, come back, cancel your policy and start a new one.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
