Shipping from Australia to Malaysia
With the lack of some ferries stopping me from island hopping I decided to ship my bike from Australia to Kuala Lumpur. I was planning to ship from Darwin but had trouble locating a company that wanted to ship my bike. I found Ivan Smolijko of Bikes Abroad Pty Ltd who made everything simple ( relatively)
For $1900 Aus, I dropped my bike off at the Perth BMW dealer (they operate from Perth and Brisbane). They crated up the bike for me and Ivan emailed me all the necessary papaerwork, and flew the bike out. Once in KL I got a taxi to the Freight Terminal and lodged my passport with customs to I could enter the protected area, pay the small charge by credit card to the customs people, see the fright agent and get my bike. They will forklift it to the loading dock for you but you need to have something that will cut the 3 metal bands that go around the crate. The crate itself is mainly cardboard and some wooden cross pieces that can be managed with your hands. One of the things you are told is that your bike will be purged of all fluids. It arrived with the same small amount of fuel I left in it, so I was able to ride it to a fuel station and fill up. My 20 litre tank costs £7 to fill up here. Ivan can be contacted at: ivan attt bikesabroad.com.au.
