KLR650 available for Cairo to Cape Town, Sept 2016

I bought a new KLR650 12 months ago for a Cape to Cairo trip which I am doing June to start of September 2016. I am due to be in/around Cairo from the first week of September 2016.

I am currently looking at options for the bike at the end of the trip. I can't sell in Egypt and my default position is to ship it back to Cape Town or bring it to the UK.

However, if anyone is looking for a bike to ride from Cairo to Cape Town and this might fit the bill feel free to get in touch to see if we can work something out (without obligation either way).

The bike is registered in South Africa and owned by my brother (a South African permanent resident). It is modified for touring as you would expect (crash bars, bash plate, stiffened suspension, chain oiler, luggage etc). I will be travelling using a RSA carnet (which you would need to replace - available through the RSA AA).

I've not thought through all the logistics of this but the key principles would be:

- i would want a deposit equivalent to the value of the bike, refundable on return of the bike to my brother in Cape Town
- i am not looking for a market rent but would want to agree a fair figure to cover wear and tear/depreciation due to the extra mileage
- we service/get the bike serviced on handover (my expense at start, yours at the end)
- my brother will sort the legal/police documents so you can travel with the bike across borders
- everything is 'above board'; i want to be fully compliant and respectful of local laws/customs

Feel free to get in touch.

Cheers
Andy

Hi Yannis, unfortunately the KLR was destroyed in a road accident. I now have an XT660z but I left it in Kenya where it is being air freighted to Cape Town in the next week or so.

Yep. Its demise was captured here: https://youtu.be/QB_cUiZEt-g

Trip was amazing anyway and loved the xt so written off to experience - it certainly got me suitably attuned to African driving standards!!!

Hey andy,

I would be interested on doing the trip from Cairo to Cape town.
I am currently in Ethiopia and I fly out from Cape ton on May. I Traveled from Cape town to Yemen on 2008-2009.
Is the bike still in Cairo or has already someone driven it down to CT?
How much is the deposit of the bike? I have an Africa Twin in Berlin.
Let me know,
Thanks,
Jordi

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
