Inflating Thermarest Mats

Hi guys, I am looking to replace my Thermarest Trail Pro with a Neoair Voyager as this looks to be more comfortable and more compact but is not self inflating. Blowing it manualy is lengthy and encourages the growth of algae and fungi. As some of us carry 12v pumps, how do we attach these to the strange Thermarest valve? Is there an adaptor or a DIY solution involving rubber tubes or grommets?

Yeah, it's an awkward one - here's what the manufacturer says: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Y-u568W3tk

I expect you could just use duct tape.

I've got one of the little battery pumps recommended by Thermarest. The outlet stub from the blower is rubber and goes over the sleeping pad valve. When you see it, it's pretty obvious. Very handy little piece of kit, wouldn't be without it.

You wouldn't use a 12v tyre pump by the way, these are low volume high pressure, the opposite of the high volume low pressure that you need!

After some head scratching, some 1/2" water hose, a bit of 3/8 fuel pipe, and the conical adaptor on the air pump, and VOILA!! A neat and workable solution. I tried this on my Thermarest Trail Pro and it pumped it in about 2 1/2 minuites. A neoair would probably take a minute longer due to the greater volume. similar to the Thermarest pumps.

I've been using Thermarest pads since they first hit the market in the mid-eighties. I've still got a few from that era, plus a half-dozen or so purchased more recently. Some have had hundreds of inflations (no exaggeration)--always by mouth. I've never had an issue with "algae and fungi." No mold, either, which seems the more likely problem.

On the other hand, I've never cut one open and looked inside. Maybe they're teeming with plant and animal life...but what do I care? I blow into them; I don't inhale.

Mileage varies, but it sure seems worth thinking about.

looking at one of them - i have a little pump with a 9v battery that i use with some electrical tape. reuse it many times and have some wrapped around the unit for when i need more or for other emergencies. will post a pic when i get back. i cant remember where i got it sadly.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
