Insurance in the UK for a non resident.

My buddy is visiting here in Europe, based in the UK, for 3 months. He’s a Brit living in Australia with an Australian licence.

He has a bike here, a KTM690 kitted out for a Euro TET trip, in his name and we’ve sorted out insurance for that, but I’d like to add him to my insurance for a spare dirt bike I have for some UK trails, and also to one of my road bikes.

Has anyone managed to add a non resident to their insurance?

I suspect it'll very much come down to the insurance company. Most won't handle non UK licensed riders, and adding him to your policy won't make it any better. He might be better off taking out his own insurance for a short term - a guy I know insured a UK bike on a US licence with Bikesure, but it was expensive.

Contact Adrian Flux Insurance (and speak to a human) - you can get a [short term] policy through Bikesure that will cover non-resident non-UK licence holders on a machine not owned by them, as long as the bike has regular UK cover for the actual owner too...

ie. the circumstances you describe where you want to lend a bike to a friend who is non-resident/non-UK licence holder.

It's not especially cheap, but it is possible.

Hope that helps...

It’s a bit of an (expensive) nightmare. Here’s what he ended up with:

3months insurance TP only on his 690, UK registered in his name at my address-£400

1 month insurance on my Yamaha WR250F, TP only - £200

All from BikeSure/Adrian Flux

None of our bike policies would add him as a named driver.

1 year as a named driver on our Defender, fully comp. - £395

He can insure as a temporary named driver on my Range Rover for £100 per 30 days.

Or drive my other, more expensive and much faster car for free!

All of this mess is recent, as he’s been on my insurance many times before without fuss.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
