Personal safety - Murmansk Russia?
Hi All,
A mate and I are travelling from Ireland to Nordkapp and then across the Russian border to Murmansk, south then to Kandalaksa and then west again to the Russian Finnish border at Salla and into Finland.
I have been to Russia a few times but never by mororcycle and a bit more concerned since the mate just bought the most gleaming shiny new vfr800.
Any advice on personal safety (other than don't go )
Thanks in advance!
Declan

Dont wash/polish the bike.
Dont leave it unattended unless locked to something solid.
Park overnight in secure parking.
Ensure luggage is secure and tamperproof.
Dont wear expensive 'civvy' clothes, shoes, watch, rings, chains etc.
Think where you park/walk.
Big cities create and attract wealth -> envy -> theft. Remote country areas where they never see it flaunted, do not - or not as much. I think the most dangerous parts of anywhere are outside but near to cities. All cities have their problem areas. Learn to recognise the signs - generally run down areas - graffitti - small groups of people lolling about - smashed windows on buildings -litter - broken car window glass on road sides - abandoned/stripped out old cars.
If it's going to go it's going to go! Just make it look harder for them so they may feel it is easier to look elsewhere.
Really Russia is as safe or as unsafe as anywhere. Dont be put off - just think and take care AND ENJOY.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
