From the archives: Western Sahara Convoy
Twenty years ago, if you were heading South, you would have needed to join a convoy at Dakhla to continue to the Mauritanian border...
Those days are long gone with only a few internet references (in English) to the convoy plus older guide books (like the 1st edition of Sahara Overland).
A few good quotes:
Quote:
We waited at the campsite for two days, working out which among the other vehicles would make it and who would fall by the wayside or give up and fly.

Anyone remember joining the convoy?

We did it in late 2001, like most travel experiences like that, was actually quite good after the event. Spent a day going on mass from office to office filling out the same paperwork in triplicate, timed out, had to go back in morning supposedly in rush as convey would leave at 9am but true to form, sat in convoy for whole day. Finally went off in evening but as per previous accounts that we had read, no one saw who started it, local vehicles just started off.
Then became good because it was wacky races. All the local vehicles that had lead off were ridiculously overloaded so you could see all the vehicles fanning out three across then you would get a ripple effect coming down the line as another vehicle was coming the other way. That got us back up to the main road to then head south to the fort at which point it temporarily dropped back to single file until we took to the desert. Had this massive private french overland truck with retired couple in it and he really knew how to drive so he came rallying after us with a few other vehicles parrallel to the main road. We were one of the early ones to get to the fort but was still dark and then vehicles kept coming in for following few hours.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
