Water

What's the situation with water availability for drinking and cooking etc?

Is there an abundance of bottled water available at outlets?

We can carry 50 litres in the truck, is it worth filling up in towns with the bottled water and carrying it around or do petrol stops sell water as well?

Is a filtration set up , like the MSR hand held version worth carrying?

Bottled water is available everywhere and is the best option for drinking. However,I had a wing tank in my LR which was invaluable for camping for non-drinking water for showers and washing up etc.

Most garages in the South will let you fill up your water tank from their tap (if it is working) but you will need to carry a water container, funnel and/or length of hose and various fittings in order to do this. All makes for a very untidy rear!

Thanks for the info tony, we have a few containers which are kept as drinking and separately for washing but the funnels and hose stuff is a good shout

You can buy bottled water everywhere, don't be the least bit concerned.

Gasoline retailing is not quite the same in Morocco as it is in Europe, where gas stations always have a convenience store attached. In rural Morocco, gas stations sell gas, and shops sell water. You will find shops everywhere. Having said that, it is prudent to carry a supply of water with you at all times, you never know when you might have a breakdown or get lost.

I have never seen anyone selling "bulk water". It's either sold in bottles, or free to fill up from a tap.

I don't think you need to bother. I've never had any problem with the quality of bottled water (or even tap water in better hotels) in Morocco.

Be aware that there is an etiquette across all the North African countries that you simply cannot refuse a request from another person for water. In other words, if someone you don't know and well never see again comes up to you and asks for water, you are morally obliged to give them water (usually a bottle, if you are carrying bottles). To not do so is unthinkable.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
