I remember the Chiffa Gorge – blundering out of Algiers a different way every time, then stuck in the rain behind a lorry belching soot at 15mph and unable to get past, like some back road in the Lake District.
Looks like they've drilled through it now.
Link also mentions just 200km of asphalt to reach the Mali border.
Really?
I got the latest Mich 741 map the other day which shows the Tanezrouft in red as a major highway, one level down from an autoroute.
I thought that seemed optimistic but had another look at Bing and sure enough, whenever the image was taken there was only a 360-km gap between asphalt north of BBM and the same running south of Reggane.
At the south end looks like they may have used an old unnamed bordj for hardcore (below).
Afaik it's the one patch in Alg that IGN never mapped below 1:1m.
Railway via Kidal reminds me of a 20-year-old book I'm reading which mentions plans for a Caspian oil pipeline to Pakistan, via Afghanistan.
I wonder how that's going.
