ATA carnet accepted in Tunisia for a motorbike?

Dear all,

Has anybody entered Tunisia with an unregistered motorbike or ATV (on a trailer) on an ATA carnet? On this link I read "Tunisia - Only accept goods for Exhibitions and Fairs, and Professional Equipment." Does anybody have a more promising experience and if yes, from which date aproximately?

Thanks in advance!

Unregistered means also no insurance, right? Normally you have to prove you've got insurance in the port. And the customs will want to put their stamp and the registration number along with it into your passport.

Hey DesertSoul,

The carnet is there to prevent illegal import of vehicles. It doesn't make a different if you ride on it or not. In your case you cannot bring the bike in without registration.
Without registration there can no CdP being issued. If is was possible, theoretical you can bring the bike into the country without being documented and sell it without import taxes.

Hope this is an answer on your question.

Cheers

By the way, a phone call or e-mail to your ATA office will provide you even more clarity in this particular matter.

Hi guys!

Thanks for your replies. But the story (as I returned from Tunisia) goes like this:

The insurance is only necessary for on-road use, which would be the case had the quad not been transported on the trailer. So, insurance dismissed.

CPD. I wasn't talking about the CPD since Tunisia doesn't require one. Tunisia just stamps the vehicle (with its identification number, the easiest one being the registration plate) into the passport. ATA carnet was at hand to prove the ownership. ATA office in Slovenia doesn't know whether Tunisian Customs accept the ATA carnet for unregistered vehicles.

Actual procedure at Tunisian Customs:
All other vehicles were stamped in the passports with their registration numbers, the one in question with its chassis number and considered transported goods. No ATA carnet ever showed to the officers.
Upon exit, all the vehicles were cleared, including the one in question.

Nothing special. Pretty quick and straightforward, with the following news:
  • now they require baksheesh openly,
  • they do not ask anymore about gps, radio (CB, VHF) nor SAT phones.
