Who wants to join us on a tour through Algeria in December 2024?

We’re an English-German couple with our dog in a Landcruiser, just starting to investigate options for travel in Algeria, so we need to be quick in creating the routing - but you can still contribute to create a trip together!

* We‘ll take a guide for at least the southern part of the tour, likely the whole time.
* Happy to stay 3 to 4 weeks.
* Prefer December but can do any time between end November 2024 and the beginning of January 2025.

We would like to enter from Tunisia. But I am sure we could arrange with agency for people to join from other entry points and we meet up somewhere.
Departing on a ferry that takes dogs, to Spain. From what I can see so far that would be from Oran.

Could be something like these routes taken by others, but they're just meant as conversation starters.

We’re most interested in getting to know the landscapes and culture. It’s not about hardcore deep sand adrenaline or going up and down the dunes for fun. BUT we are super happy to travel off-road and we have sand driving experience.

Anyone up for it?
Cheers,
Helen (Jens & Skopsko)

Hello,
since the Algeria - Mauri border seemed to have re-opened, I was contemplating over this route (sort of, open to suggestions) this winter.

Coming from Germany via Sardinia (Oct/Nov). Not sure yet, if to turn left or right at Nuakschott.

Happy to meet up along the way. Will drop you a message, when stars align and vague plans transform into certain dates and routes.

Cheers

Hello!

Dutch couple here, travelling with a Defender. We just booked our ferry tickets for 12 dec - 5 jan. We were planning to see how far we can get without a guide (seems doable right now), but happy to share plans and see if we can meet up.

Cheers

Arne

Algeria on motorbike

Hello guys,

I am also planning a trip to Algeria by the end of December on motorbike. Collecting info and trying to arrange everything to be able to be absent the whole of Christmas and more. Same plan: go South without a guide.

Check ferry Almeria - Ghazaouet if they allow dogs as well: https://armastrasmediterranea.com/en...eria-ghazaouet

You probably know this Todo and Google is to blame, but you definitely want to take the red route and avoid PFZ. Transit trucks get droned there.

Yes, Sir, you're certainly right. Blame google. I´ve just typed Tunis - Nuakschott- Tangier into google maps for that quick reply here, during a brief itch caused by severe travelitis.

I'm totally aware of the risks involved and the several shelled vehicle wracks posted here and elsewhere along the route, as one of the pictures features the model I´d intend to go in. But the longer I think of, my n/a Diesel 109 HT Series Land Rover might be a tough choice anyways and a quick and sudden unexpected strike may come in as relief from the cramped seating and the bleeding ears.... Maybe I'll chicken out and just dip our toes into the sand in Morocco for the bucket list...

My armchair explorer´s believe for that part of the world yet is, if one would get pass the border at that recently officially opened crossing between Algeria and Mauri, more boots on the ground information would have been collected or advise given and a convoy may form, to divert around the seriously affected area. Fuel logistics for this detour may be the hardest challenge, as my leafer sips 12-14ltr/hr in low gears, but only moves like a snail, when using all of its 900kg of carrying capacity...I´m still doing the math and it may turn into a u-turn already in Tindouf....if at all...

That made me chuckle - don't ask me how I know ;-)

Another side benefit of a Diesel 109 is that no bandit in their right mind would want to steal it when there are loads of lovely 6-cyl, 4-litre TLCs all over the desert.

Although my ears are still bleeding from that 80ies sound track for years now, your video made me believe, a desert trip may be still worthwhile in a Landy. I ran into that car ages ago and refuse to part from it, unless we've honked a camel off the road...

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
