Mongolian/Russian border at Tashanta and the Nadaam
Does anyone know if the above border opening is affected by the nadaam ? We will be in Olgii and leaving for Russia on the 11th or 12th.

It is definitely affected.
ANd it is even possible that it is closed 2 days more.
At least this was so in 2013 and 2015
in 2015 the first day the border opened again was the 16th.
But as sunday the border is closed anyway, you dont really know if it opens before Sunday or after...

Yes, and in this case Olgii might not be the best place for this.
Blue Wolf is a nice Ger camp, but the city and the people there are not worth staying there more days than needed,.

I've been in touch with blue wolf, they are sure it will open on the 13th, so have booked in. May as well do the Naadam before we leave.

That amazes me.
Naadam is from 11.-13.July.
And in this days it is always closed.
And usually 1-2 days more.
At least this was so in 2013 and 2015.
As I sayd, in 2015 the first day the border opened was the 16th of July.
And this was a thursday, so it was closed till wednesday
And if you have to way at the border, better not take any invitations for tea in the Gers on the way.

It is the date for the Bayan Olgii Naadam. Each region has their own dates, up at Moron it is 7-9.
As to the border being open on the 13th I am trusting the Blue Wolf guy that I contacted.
Which begs the question, name me a place in Mongolia that is ok to hang out for a few days :-)

Ok, you are correct , I've had an email confirmation from the Mongolia customs confirming it is shut on the dates you stated :-(
Looks like we will make a dash for it and try to get out on the 10th

I was suren it is correct, Naadam is in Mongolia official Holyday from 11-13. of July. Every year.
And yes, every region has different dates for the Wrestling and Horserace etc.
But that has nothing to do with the official holyday.
My wife is Mongolian, so I was pretty sure aboutn that.

Maybe not a great idea; that area sounds a bit sketchy from klausmong's description.

Blue Wolf Ger camp is ok, and the people helpful.
But this arean of Mongolia is Kasakh, and the dont really feel like the rest of Mongolia and dont care about the rest.
So they do their own thing and own Naadam and because they never cross border to Russia during Naadam, they dont know about the closing dates exactely.
And the only one who knows at Blue Wolf is a Woman, the daughter of the owner

Well, all we can do is turn up at the border on the 10th, if not open then back to Olgii for the rest of the week. If nothing else it will be a day out. :-)
I see the Bayan-Olgii Nadaam dates have shifted to 11-12, I had read they could be fluid :-)
