Ride to Lake Tahoe

I'm from India and am visiting San Francisco on work. I had the weekend free. So I decided to rent a BMW F800 GS from Dubbelju Motorcycle Rentals in San Francisco and ride to Lake Tahoe on Saturday. I rode around the lake in the evening, spent the night in a hotel by the lake and tried to do some off-roading the next morning, but failed miserably thanks to the tyres on the motorcycle that were meant for tarmac. But in all it was a good experience. I rode a total of 491 miles (785 kms) over weekend.

Here are a few images.

Here is a video I captured from my chest mounted GoPro camera.

It looks beautiful up there! I lived in California (L.A. area) for 25 years, and never did get up there, but made it to Nevada City which is near there-- but not on a bike.

You probably have made the ride on one of the last clear weekends. Winter will come soon, and the roads will be snowy and icy for months until the spring thaw. There might be a couple more weekends left, so if someone is thinking of doing the same, check the weather forecast, and don't hesitate if it is forecast to be clear these next few weekends--it wouldn't be nice to get caught in a blizzard or rainstorm in the mountains.

Thank you for sharing!!

I have rented from them a couple of times. Their bikes are well taken care of. I would recommend them.

Perka--keep an eye on the weather if you plan to copy Deelip's route into the mountains. If there is poor weather in the higher elevations, you can explore the coast.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
