I am planning a trip from Portugal to Australia and need advice on negotiating China. I need to get from Kyrgyzstan to India. Very grateful for any advice on how to do this, the associated costs, etc. Is this doable or is it too much of a headache?

Hi Bruce,

When entering with your own vehicle you have to book the trip with chinesse agency. You are getting a guide who is following you or the group with his own car. The agency takes care of all the customs procedures at the entry and exit border. The also deal with all paperwork in China so you can have chineese registration for your bike or car, drivers linecse and number plate.
I am currently arranging such trip together with 20 motorcyclists entering China on 3rd and on 10th September from Kyrgystan and exiting to Pakistan. That is 5 days trip. The group for Sept 3rd is full. We still can take people for Sept 10th. Price per person is about 850-950 usd. It depends on the size of a group. Best price is for a grop of 10-12 people. The price covers almost everything besides your personal expenses like food.

Usually price include:
1.Tour guide fee
2.Custom clearance fee
3.Permit fee
4.Chinese license and number plate
5.Vehicle examination fee
6.Insurance fee for vehicle
7.Guiding vehicle fee: (all roads)
8.Transportation between kashgar and Immigration office.
9.Hotel fee for guide in Tashkorgan
10.Meals fee for guide and driver
11.Hotel for you (3star, standard room with two bed, 2person one room)
12. Parking fee at the immigrations office

Price exclude:
1. Meal fee for clients
2. Fuel, parking and toll gate fee for your own vehicle
3.Tourist spot entrance ticket fee
4.Tip for guide and Other own expenses

You have to be under 70 years old to drive car in China or under 60 years old to drive a motorcycle.

The Chinese code for motorbike is "E".
Car is C1

So my Chinese DL us C1E.

Provisions on the Application and Use of Motor Vehicle Driving Permits (2016)

Article 59 Anyone over 60 shall not drive a large bus, tractor, city bus, medium-sized bus, large freight car, trolleybus or tramcar; if he holds a large bus, tractor, city bus, medium-sized bus or large freight vehicle driving license, he shall change the permitted driving license of a small vehicle or a motor vehicle with a small automatic transmission vehicle at the place where the motor vehicle is issued or outside the place where the vehicle is located.

Those aged over 70 shall not drive a low-speed freight vehicle, three-wheeled vehicle, ordinary three-wheeled motorcycle, ordinary two-wheeled motorcycle and wheeled self-propelled mechanical vehicle; those who have ordinary three-wheeled motorcycle or ordinary two-wheeled motorcycle driving license shall apply to the vehicle management station outside the place where the motor vehicle driving license is issued or the vehicle management station where the permit is issued for a motor vehicle driving a moped.

It is clear to.me as off (2016) the legal age to drive a car and ride a motorbike is 70.

Before 2016 yes for motorbike it was 60.

I don't live in China.

By arranging the trip I meant I am trying to find people to share the cost of an expensive trip through China, because you have to buy such if you want to enter with your own vehicle registerd outside China.

So we are now 21 people byuing such trip from chinese travel agency. That agancy is arranging basicaly everything. That agency also tells us that motorcyclist over 60 years old cannot drive. It is not the only agency telling that. And I am not arguing with what they say. They know chinese law. I don't have to.

So the bikes of drivers over 60 years old will have to be transported on truck.

When I was planning my sixth ride around the world I knew there was some rule on us "old guys" but didn't factor in riding in a car/truck while my motorcycle was in a truck. I guess that's the price one pays for being in their "Golden Years."

Opted to plan to go around China.

60 years and older on Your tours need to ride in TRUCK sounds like fun.

As you say the Chinese tour agent SHOULD KNOW THE LAW.
At 62 with a full legal Chinese C1E driving license, and with 4 motorbikes I need to be very careful going by what you say and your Chinese tour agency.
Because I must be breaking the law?.

Everyone who reads a post on the HUBB would like to find out the correct information for that country.

So all us old gits with motorbikes who are older than 60 STAY away from CHINA.

I have no interested in what you or your tour guide says or believes, but maybe the information that I have posted may help some motorbike rider who is over 60 to ride in China, to that point my post MUST be good for the HUBB.
Ride Safe, but watch your age.

We found a transportation on a truck as a workaround. Sometimes it is not so simple to skip the country.
I will double check with the agency the rules that you have posted.

Just ask them to ring up the local Traffic Police to confirm WHAT is now 2018 the Max legal age to ride a Motorbike.?
Because before 2016 is was 60, now after 2016 its now 70?

Now if I am correct then you will make a lot of customers happy, and maybe you could get MORE older bike rider wanting to ride China.

So here are the results. I asked several companies that I have been collecting offers from.

• 3 companies confirmed that the limit is 60yrs old
• 2 companies says that generally the limit is 60yrs old BUT there is some procedure, different than regular, which might result in issuing drivers license for 60yrs old but it is both complicated and expensive. Validity of such document will be limited to 7 days as one of those two companies says.

It would; be interesting to know if this law is only for western who are applying for a Chinese Temporary license, or is the traffic law for ALL people including Chinese?
