Dreaming of crossing Lake Baikal in winter, please advice.
Hi,
my wife and I have this crazy idea to try to cross Lake Baikal in winter. I'm currently doing a research but can't find much info about this kind of adventure, although it seems like many cyclist did it already. I think that some time ago I saw a YT video of a German couple doing something similar but I can't find this video again.
So my first question is, do you know of any resources that would be useful in my planning? Maybe somebody here have done it before.
My second question; do you think it's even doable? I imagine extreme weather conditions and extremely hard terrain to ride on.
Also how dangerous do you think it would be to try it on a motorcycle? I suppose the biggest danger I see is breaking ice. I know that waters under the ice are constantly moving often causing cracks, especially at night. I've heard of people pitching a tent close to the shore for safety. I guess that our bike with gear, both of us, food and petrol would probably be something like 300kg (I ride BMW F650). Would that even matter how heavy it is?
How would you approach snow/ice riding in these conditions? I was thinking that I would need studs for ice and some sort of chains for snow. Not sure if something to stabilize the bike would be needed (like side cart for example). Any thoughts?
And finally, logistically I want to get my bike to the lake before the winter starts, leave it there and get back to Russia in full winter, ride it and leave it again till spring once finished. Do you know if I would have any problems leaving my bike in Russia? I plan on getting multiple entry business visa. Do they stamp in vehicles in passports?
Any thought would be really appreciated.
