GoogleMaps Offline
Possibly this should be in the section specific to navigation but thought it would be useful for people here to read too.
Google Maps will soon include offline search and navigation | The Verge
Looks like we might be able to use GoogleMaps offline, I don't know exactly how much of it we can save at one time or even what the total amount of data would be.
But would make navigating through countries like Kyrgyzstan a lot easier, no data connections out will the Pamirs and lots of tracks. Would be good to be able to see on maps exactly where they go and plan the day better.

In that respect Google are playing catch up with not just Nokia but OSM developers. The latter is commonly used nowadays for all manner of apps on Android platforms which offer various levels of functionality, usually for free.
How things have moved along in just a few years, and innovation of new products for route planning and navigation + communications is inevitable.
Perhaps the sub-forums in here about such matters are becoming overtaken by the technological developments of the ubiquitous smart phone?

For Android & iPhones, try an app called PDF MAPS.
This app uses the phones GPS to show you where you are on a previously downloaded map when you are outside the service area.
You are required to download the relevant maps you need before hand, a range of different maps are available ie: topographical, tourist & natural resource.
Some maps aren't free, but the majority are free.
This app isn't Google maps off-line. But it may help someone, especially usefull in remote areas of Australia as all Australian topographical maps are free.

I'm impressed with that here app. Shame it doesn't allow downloading of the satellite imagery or the use of gpx files though

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
