Mexico (from Texas to Guatemala)

With the current situation in Mexico, will safety be a bigger concern than ever?

Also, what would be a "safe route" through Mexico on a motorcycle if I'm going from Texas to Guatemala. I'm open to suggestions.

By the way, I'll go going through Mexico beginning of September.

Best,

I went from Michigan to Brazil in 2015. Through Mexico I took the gps route. As long as you ride during the day you'll be fine. Get away from the border towns early in the day and you shouldn't have any problems.
The route I took was Laredo to Monterrey then down to San Luis Potosi. (Left the motorcycle outside at night with the cover in front of the hostel, no problems)
Then to San Miguel de Allende, then Mexico City , Puebla, Minatitalan, tuxula gutierrez, tapachula.
Mexico is a safe as long as your smart and riding during the day.
That goes for all of Central America or any where that you go. If you do decide to go to Panama I will say the border crossings are kind of a pain in the butt.
Mexico on a 650 motorcycle really isn't that big and you can get from one side to the other rather quickly.
I got food sickness around Monterrey but was good after that all the way to Brazil. Bring some Pepmo Bismol just in case.

Texas to Mexico in Octoberish 2017!

I'm planning to leave in October down to Argentina.I'll be going through either Brownsville or Laredo. Security is my concern as well. I do plan on crossing the border in the morning and getting inland past military check points as soon as possible.

Some of the responses I read here are unbelievable. You guys need to read some current ride report about Mexico ... or maybe buy a BASIC guide book!

First off:
You will pass Military Check point everywhere in Mexico, not just near the border. This is a good thing. They are there to PROTECT YOU! Get it?

Next, you can have shoot outs anywhere the Cartels operate (in many Mexican states). Gang wars come and go, shoot outs happen, but generally speaking these guys DO NOT target Tourists and try not to kill Gringos as this brings more police.

That's not to say things are always 100% safe, but for the most part you face no real danger traveling on your bike. Use common sense, talk to locals, listen to, but don't believe ALL the news on TV/Radio.

I even rode at night in Mexico ... a lot. With good headlight on good road, not the Death Sentence you hear about so often. Millions of Mexicans drive at night. Most roads outside Baja are fenced now so no Cows on the road these days since 20 years.

PLEASE ... Do some research and BE SURE to explore Mexico and take in the WONDERFUL history plus all the amazing geographical variations that rival anywhere in the world:
Incredible sub tropical Jungles
World Class Beaches, Snorkeling and Surfing
Fabulous Deserts and Mountains.
World class FUN motorcycle roads with very little speed enforcement! (so restricted Canadians can relax!)

I love the Mexican Central Highlands. (the Bajio) Most beautiful historic towns,
lots to see and learn about, cooler in Summer. All World Class sights.

In general, time of year and weather are important. I like October, November,
December and January.

Most here on HUBB blast through Mexico to get all those passport stamps and pannier stickers, to make the Stalratte boat in Panama. But where are you guys going? What is it you think you'll see that Mexico does not have?

Rushing through Mexico is a poor strategy, IMO. You will see more and have more fun than anywhere else in Latin America, IMHO. And it's CHEAP!

Run out of time?
That's your problem. Make another trip just for S. America, you can't see shit in a little 2 month whirl wind tour anyway!

Most the folks here come by and ask lots of questions but never return and rarely contribute valuable Info to HUBB. Typical selfish behavior ... and not surprising!

I drove mostly alone in Mexico and mid America. Never felt unsafe. Put the bike always inside the hotel. I did not drive at night.

Not to mention the food, I love the food! I have made two trips from Oregon to Nicaragua (where I live) on KLR's. I spent a month combined riding through Mexico. I have never had a problem aside from running out of pesos. So much to see and do. I'm getting ready to do the trip in reverse in January just to ride in Mexico again
