Some of the responses I read here are unbelievable. You guys need to read some current ride report about Mexico ... or maybe buy a BASIC guide book!
First off:
You will pass Military Check point everywhere in Mexico, not just near the border. This is a good thing. They are there to PROTECT YOU! Get it?
Next, you can have shoot outs anywhere the Cartels operate (in many Mexican states). Gang wars come and go, shoot outs happen, but generally speaking these guys DO NOT target Tourists and try not to kill Gringos as this brings more police.
That's not to say things are always 100% safe, but for the most part you face no real danger traveling on your bike. Use common sense, talk to locals, listen to, but don't believe ALL the news on TV/Radio.
I even rode at night in Mexico ... a lot.
With good headlight on good road, not the Death Sentence you hear about so often. Millions of Mexicans drive at night. Most roads outside Baja are fenced now so no Cows on the road these days since 20 years.
PLEASE ... Do some research and BE SURE to explore Mexico and take in the WONDERFUL history plus all the amazing geographical variations that rival anywhere in the world:
Incredible sub tropical Jungles
World Class Beaches, Snorkeling and Surfing
Fabulous Deserts and Mountains.
World class FUN motorcycle roads with very little speed enforcement!
(so restricted Canadians can relax!)
I love the Mexican Central Highlands. (the Bajio) Most beautiful historic towns,
lots to see and learn about, cooler in Summer. All World Class sights.
In general, time of year and weather are important. I like October, November,
December and January.
Most here on HUBB blast through Mexico to get all those passport stamps and pannier stickers, to make the Stalratte boat in Panama. But where are you guys going? What is it you think you'll see that Mexico does not have?
Rushing through Mexico is a poor strategy, IMO. You will see more and have more fun than anywhere else in Latin America, IMHO. And it's CHEAP!
Run out of time?
That's your problem. Make another trip just for S. America, you can't see shit in a little 2 month whirl wind tour anyway!
Most the folks here come by and ask lots of questions but never return and rarely contribute valuable Info to HUBB. Typical selfish behavior ... and not surprising!
