Pakistan to Kyrgyzstan via China
Hello,
I am planning a bit trip for 2024 or 25, and just playing around with possible routes. Has anybody the Pakistan to Kyrgyzstan crossing of CHina lately (well just before covid). If so what was the cost, and how hard was it to organize? (Assuming I would not be able to get anybody else to cross, and I would be alone).
Also if I would not cross into China, how far up on the Pakistani side can I go?
Thank you.

I can answer the last part of your question with all the way to the border and it is worth it, the KKH is one of the world's great motorcycling roads even if you have to turn around at the top, hopefully someone will be along to answer the rest of your question.

Thanks Mark, what time of the year did you do it, and could you get there on your own, or you had escort? Can you take a boat across the lake with the bike, or it is not possible?

This was October which was a good time to be there, for that trip I flew to Gilgit and rented that bike, there was no escort in that part of Pakistan and they have built a road around the lake by then which was 2018.

Irrelevant. china is closed and will be for this year at least. Regardless of what those agents say.

I don't want to start an argument here, but wondering what make you
to know more about China travel restrictions than the local guys?
Assuming is not very beneficial on travel plans...

Could it be possible that the local travel agents would be eager to get some down-payments on a tour, and might plant some optimistic idea that China (which has just about the strictest covid restrictions at the moement) will suddenly open its land borders?
As far as I know, China is open to citizens and residents only, and even then requires going through a ridiculous 21 day quarantine.
Cross border trade is at a almost standstill between Central Asia and China (goods must be thoroughly disinfected and no person can cross into China as far as I know). If the Chinese don't care to open up for trade, for sure they don't care about a handful of overland tourists.
I would forget making plans about China until it is demonstrably open to cross-border travellers.

Maybe seeing a friend of mine being conned by so called "reputable" agents in china proclaiming that borders are open soon and putting a deposit. Use common sense. china has a zero tolerance policy towards the virus. They dont want tourists at the best of times let alone anytime soon when there is, from overlanders especially, such miniscule benefit to anyone.

To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
