Bali to ban tourists from renting motorbikes

Story here.

This is a pity, I'm just about finished 6 weeks of dogsitting for a friend that's visiting his daughter there, having scooter access has been handy for him. Ho hum.

“You guys”

Fella don’t confuse overlanders on here with the swilling morons that carry on in Bali.

BTW - the Balinese are just as bad as the visitors - it’s just finger pointing.

The operative phrase in post #2 is "they say." Let's make some allowances for folks whose native language is not English.

I think we all know who is meant by "you guys:" it's tourists renting motorbikes. And I think we all know that this doesn't mean every single tourist, but rather a high enough percentage so that it causes consternation among locals. No mystery about how that works.

Whether tourists are being scapegoated in this case for something that is largely not their fault I can't really say....but it doesn't take many troublemakers to spoil things for the rest. Consider, if you like, loud pipes, moped rentals, parties at Airbnb houses, or whatever other example you please. And yes, there are a lot of tourists on Bali who act in ways that offend local sensibilities. The ban on motorbike rentals isn't the first nor the last attempt by local government to deal with this.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
