Buying Bike Brazil - Traveling South America
Hi Everyone,
Any help appreciated here.
I am thinking about doing a huge trip in which I plan to fly into Sao Paulo and then travel around South Amercia and eventually upto Alaska.
I will not be bringing a bike with me but planning instead to buy once in Sao Paulo.
Has anybody had any experience of Buying a bike in Sao Paulo - any help here appreciated and also what sort of bike would you recommend for such a trip. Cheaper the better but most imprtantly I want something that is reliable.
I am looking to start in Sao Paulo on around 1st September.
Thanks for help.

Hi Ed, two major problems with you plan unless you are talking about a bicycle (bike).
1: You will not be able to buy a motorcycle in Brazil without a Brazilian Cadastro de Pessoas Fisicas (CPF). This can be obtained but you will need to have a Bank Account and then there is license, registration and insurance. (all of which will be a big headach and take much time).
2: There is no such thing as a cheap motorcycle in Brazil!
If you are talking about a bicycle, please ignore the above.
Sorry to rain on your plan.
You may want to look into buying from someone who is ending a trip in South America and not planing on shipping the motorcycle home or buy something in some other country. Search the forum and you can find info on buying in SA.

That's right about bikes being very expensive in Brazil, but I did not need a bank account in order to get a CPF,( a bank account is only possible when being a permanent resident) just proof of residence. Till recently someone's electricitybill was enough but nowadays it won;t do. You must find some resident who makes an official statement ( at a so called ' cartorio') that you live there at that address, than pay the fee for a CPF at the Banco do Brasil and than with that proof of payment go to the Receita Federal office to apply for a CPF.

CPF
Just an update for anyone new reading this.
Ive been in Brazil for 2 months and obtained a CPF completely legally, and hassle free from a post office (any will do). You fill out a form online and head down with the printout and 5reais (2 usd or something) and within 10 minutes youl have your CPF. Theres a very good walkthrough tutorial if you have a little google.
Also looking around (not too hard) Ive found used 150cc Hondas etc for under 500 usd. However I havent actually purchased one yet, if anyone can offer any help with that it would be greatly appreciated. If not Il update with my experience on here.

Update?
Thanks for your post on this, ChukaDaniel, and the others that replied. Was wondering if you bought a bike, and if so, how it went? I plan on doing the same. I'll be happy to post about what I learn if this thread isn't dead already.. Thanks!

I got a CPF in half a day about a year ago, no problem.
Somebody said that you get it in the post office, sorry, but that is complete ....s....
You need to print a form, fill it out, pay a fee at the post office and than go to the mentioned receita federal ( idg.receita.fazenda.gov.br/), THERE you get the CPF and not at the post office.
I payed something around R6 at the post office (I think its just some stamp fee) and after waiting for 20min at the receita federal I got the CPF without paying another fee there.
You need to give an address on that form but they dont even read through it, and you dont need a bank acount as somebody mentioned here.

Just adding to the thread in case people want to find out more details about the actual procedure of buying a motorcycle in Brazil. The procedure is quite painful and takes a lot of time. Check out the blog: https://zenmotero.com/how-to-buy-a-motorbike-in-brazil/

Buying motorcycle in Brasil
Hey there,
We Are courently on Brazil with our caravan and trying to buy a motorcycle from another foreigner because we don’t want to register the bike and all that stuff. I didn’t find no other place to start a new post so I’m just writing here.
Do any of you know somebody who wants to sell theire bike (we’re searching for an enduro 150-300 cc)?
Thank you
