Hi, does anybody knows where to find a reliable list/app/site of campings in Chile?
In Ioverlander there are some (most are wild camping gps), in Sernartur...nothing, many websites are not updated... Any suggestion?
Maybe someone has been to any camping from Iquique to Calama? We have to spend some days in this region, but can't find a lot...

iOverlander shows 345 Established Campgrounds in Chile most of which should be OK for tents and another 300 Informal Campsites of which probably half would not be at all tent friendly plus 600 wild camping places which of course have few or no facilities, but based on the sample I know about, a fair proportion would be OK for tent camping. 100 hostels shown, many of which are biker friendly.

Depends on what facilities you are looking for.

I mean established camping. I always check on Ioverlander and found some good places, but sometimes it happens to be in a remote area and can't understand if the place is good for motorbike/tent, you go there and discover it's not suitable. Or sometimes info are old, you go there and there is nothing. Therefore I'm just wondering if there was any official list in order to match info. Ioverlander remains a great website.

Check out the Copec maps (available at most Copec gas stops). IIRC they list camping as well as fuel.

The chileans do a lot of camping, so there are many sites in the tourist(y) spots. And in some not so touristy spots. There is usually at least one in each national park.

Yes Camomillo, certainly true that ioverlander info is only as good as overlanders can be bothered providing, but at least using the app you can quickly see who has checked in and more important, when they checked in.
As always the trouble is these sort of places go out of business at a great rate or go from reasonable to a grubby ruin in a couple of weeks and it is fairly common for a place to get a good write up one day, and a week later get marked as closed.
I found the same problem with campgrounds written up in official Chile tourist info.

The other problem you will have - as I know from first hand experience from north Chile right down as far as you can drive - is that as you would expect, the number of campgrounds is going to be in proportion to the number of people and towns in a particular area and inversely proportional to the distance from major population areas. So to expect hundreds of highly sophisticated campgrounds in the top or bottom 1/3 of Chile is just unreasonable. However, as an example from Arica in the north to 100km north of the capital there are 42 entries described as established campgrounds and which have been visited in the last 12 months and most within 6 months plus obviously an equal number of lesser places, and more importantly for bikers after a hard days ride through the dryest hottest desert in the world, a heap of hostals which seem to be the preferred lodgings of bikers, especially if they offer a bit of security for the bike. Not 5 star of course but 1 star sans bedbugs will often be welcome
Look at the map of that area, you can see there aren't many large towns or even villages so can't expect many fancy campgrounds either.

i do not know if you can use it on your iphone.

People install POI files on mapping applications like mapsme and osmand on smartphones, by downloading the GPX file and then opening the file which usually opens a box asking which application to open it with so you select mapsme or whatever and the points will be installed in your favourites folder.

It looks like the first screenshot below once downloaded and extracted. There are 7 folders.
The Camping Welt folder contains both .GPX which is mostly for use with a Garmin satnav AND .KML files which are needed for MapsMe . MapsMe calls POI's Bookmarks

MapsMe cannot use files in .GPX format directly (only KML/KMZ)

All sources of info will ever be either correct/accurately described/properly formatted for your use or totally up to date.. But don't despair! The way I have found (which works best for me) is to build my own databases, harvesting whatever information I can, researching specifics and detailing the databases accordingly- even then- I use the info accepting that whatever waypoints I have may no longer exist- if so - then I just go to the next one! no dramas.

For sources of info on the web, as an example( and there are a huge number to chose fom) - Here is a link from Lifes2shortnot2 - which was kind of them to publish-
You could cut and paste that data into an excel sheet (what I do)- formatted correctly... and, IF using a Garmin satnav, use POI-Loader to upload the file with a corresponding content icon.
OR,
For MapsMe, create a KML file - MapsMe works with Android and Iphones.

REM: For files to work, they need be formatted correctly (which alas can be a source of frustration for many) and be placed in the correct folder which depends on the application/software wishing to use the data.

Thanks everybody, only with iphone and garmin I think I can't charge the list, but this tecnology is too difficult to me. The list from lifes2short.... is ok and will be useful. The app of Ioverlander is actually much better and faster than website, I will keep using it. Copec map is very good, but almost any camping there.

A refreshingly pragmatic approach that works perfectly if in fact you are surrounded by suitable alternatives within striking distance, or like us, any 20 square metres of roughly level ground that is empty will do, but for a bike rider hoping for a hot shower and comfy bed after a week of roughing it, it would be better to use a database that had some chance of being current.
My other basic requirement - and this is pretty much universal - is a system that just works without requiring trawls through individual databases that are of indeterminate age, or arcane database conversions or esoteric procedures that have a 50% chance of working.
And of course if they do the right job regardless of whether there is a hotspot across the road or cell phone service with compatible SIM, so much the better. Unfortunately there aren't many camping spot systems that survive the last requirement.
