Hallo Marsos!
There is somewhere an older post what tells you about the different countrys. For some countries you will need one and you can buy it on the border, for many countries you don´t need one. Or you make your own with your computer back home and nobody ever will recognice it!
Good Luck, Appie

hello, marco
did you find a valid insurance for argentina. We also have some problem finding one. Everybody tells us abroad that it is easy to find one here, but here no insurance company ever told us it is possible !!

motorcycle insurance in south america
I bought a new Kawasaki KLR650 from a dealer in Lima Peru. He made it so easy, took care of registration, and got me insurance. I'm going traveling for two weeks and when I return it will be registered and ready to ride. We also went out, drank some while he showed me his part of the city. He is going to come visit me in the states and I made a new great friend. I will highly recommend him to anyone.

From USA down to Argentina, until today the situation is like this:
Mexico: you can buy online at https://www.bajabound.com/
Guatemala: not mandatory
El Salvador: not mandatory
Honduras: not mandatory
Nicaragua: shop at the borders (roughly 15 USD for 1 month)
Costa Rica: shop at the borders (around 50 USD for a car (cheaper for motos)
Panama: shop at the borders (roughly 15 USD for a month)
Colombia: They sell literally everywhere in gas stations or agencies.
Ecuador: not mandatory
Peru: shop at the borders or agencies in cities
Argentina & other MERCOSUR countries: You can contact with the local office of MAPFRE. They were happy to send me a quote that covers you in MERCOSUR countries.
In any case, you can always advise iOverlander (web & app) for the latest updates, border crossings info and locations where to buy in big cities/ towns.
Good luck ;-)

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
