Insurance in east Africa

Hello!
Im trying to have information about the insurances needed for a trip from Egypt to South Africa.
Does somebody who did that trip has some information about it (where to buy them, waypoints, prices..) I read about the comesa from Kenya and some other countries.... In wich border can I buy the comesa?
Sorry if is a subject already talked, but as english is not my mother tongue, maybe I dont write the right words on the searching box, as I cant find propper information.
Thank you!!!!!!

Hi,

The Yellow Card insurance of the Comesa countries is valid in most east African countries (18 to be exact). You can get it at most border posts, I got mine in Tanzania, and it costs around 100 - 120 usd. That being said, you will still have to buy an additional insurance in some countries, such as Egypt (160 Egyptian pounds= 18 euro).

Cheers,

Gee

Hi Tristan,

Hope you are well and the car is still doing what it's supposed to do!

Like I said, got mine in Tanzania. Could get an insurance for Tanzania only for 60 usd, a Comesa insurance for a limited number of countries for 100 usd, or a Comesa for all 18 countries, so opted for the last. I doubt whether it will be of any help when you get involved in an accident, though

Travel safe and have fun!

Gee

Going north to south, Ethiopia is the first country where you can buy Comesa. Although some others (eg Egypt) are on the list, to my knowledge its not possible to buy a yellow card there.

When you compare price quotes, pay attention to compare apples with apples. Prices will be different for cars vs bikes, prices are different for different engine sizes/displacement, prices are different depending on which countries you cover, and prices are different depending on which kind of coverage you buy (3rd party liability vs full liability vs theft vs ...). Since most of these insurance papers are not worth the money they are printed on, I would recommend to buy only the minimum needed. In the end, the only reason you might possibly buy insurance is to tick a box at the border, and make life easier with corrupt police. If you get into an accident, I have severe doubts that it will be of any help whatsoever. On the contrary, I think it would make things more difficult (imagine being stuck in eg Kenya while they lock you up until the translations Swaheli - Amharic sort out all the paperwork to get approval for cost coverage from your Ethiopian insurer for something that happened in Kenya ... much better to sort it out in cash there and then, instead of being stuck for months ...).

Anyways, I paid 250 Birr in Ethiopia for nearly full coverage of all Comesa countries for a 400cc bike: http://www.horizonsunlimited.com/hub...rd-addis-71265

Hi Gee

let me understand, you did not need the Comesa down South but only once you got to Tanzania... or are you referring to travel North to South??

Hi,

We drive from Belgium to South Africa along the east coast and the first country we got our Comesa was Ethiopia.
We got it in Gondar on the main street.

If any questions, send us an email!
