Bike hire in India Feb 18
New to the forum (though a vet of 2 HUBB UK events) I am planning to do a bit of India for 60 days next year. Current thinking is to fly to Kerala hire/buy a Bullet and drive up to Rajasthan and back. I am getting mixed views on whether it is possible to cross boarders on a hired bike. It sounds daft to have to buy for 60 days - any thoughts on that, and route etc etc most welcome.

Hi Andy, I was over in India last year. I travelled all around the South Chennai/Kerela/Goa etc..I found it difficult to rent a Bullet down South so headed up to Gorkarna, found a guy in a local garage. I think it was about £4 a day, although I'm good at bartering...lol ..I was there for about 2 months. I've been to India loads of times, its pretty easy to get anything you want so I wouldn't worry about it, just go over and ride. India is my favourite country, you will love it!!

Thanks for this - Im amazed that their werent loads of bikes in Goa! I guess you managed to hire a 'private' vehicle with black and white plates then? Could you have driven that north into Rajasthan?

There were loads of bikes in Goa yes, I just couldn't find anything in Kerela. To be honest, I don't know about black and white plates, I just found a bike and rode it! I didn't ride to Rajasthan although I have been there a few times over the years, its definitely worth a visit and Udaipur as well. Just a thought, maybe you could fly to Delhi instead and rent a bike from there, it gives you more options on where you want to go. I personally prefer the North but India's so big and can be frustrating. The South is a lot more chilled out, easier in every sense. I keep thinking about getting a flight to Delhi after Xmas and hiring an Enfield, the weathers getting depressing and the call of India and bikes is a constant theme in the back of my mind

Just got back from India having ridden there from U.K. There are no restrictions on riding from state to state and riding up to Raj is easy with good dual carriageways all the way (except going through Thane/Mumbai) or country tracks if you have the time.

Thanks to you both for your responses. I did consider renting from Mumbai but thought that starting from Kerala would be a more gentle start and i wanted to end up there at the end of the adventure. I wonder if you didnt have any issues because the Bullet that you had was a B&W plate one?

Hi Andy, just my two pence worth here...


I did a three month trip back in 2011 (12,000km) but flew to Delhi and headed to an area called Carol Bhagh or however its spelt..?? Just buy a bike there and head off, its that easy. The insurance comes with the bike if your lucky and it hasn't ran out. I wasn't so lucky and had to fork out 1000 rupee's. Strike a deal with the guy for a resale value back to him on your return before you buy it. Oh, nearly forgot, don't buy an Enfield whatever you do. Just buy one of the little generic Honda hero bikes, 150cc and refresh chain and sprockets, tyres, cables, battery, brakes pads/shoes as what is needed. Job done...!!!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB.
