India to Oz

Hi All,

In spring/summer of 2023 I want to ship my bike to India and ride to Oz.
I had wanted to go fully overland but with Russia, Pakistan and Iran all a bit ‘problematic’ at the moment, I’ll start in India.

A few questions please:
Does anyone anyone know if India is letting people in and out of their eastern land borders?
Is it possible to ride from India to Thailand now?
Are there covid restrictions in place in SE Asia?
Where do we get Carnets now? The last one I got was from Germany.

All information will be gratefully received.
Thanks
Graham

The region as a whole is problematic. Nothing specific in Pakistan that I am aware of and it's in my opinion the highlight of the overland route.

India / Nepal etc are great, but as far as getting to Australia is concerned, shipping to India is a bit of a waste of time as you'll need to ship out again.

I would be looking at riding through the Middle East (Turkey - Iraq - Jordan - Saudi - Oman - UAE), then shipping to Thailand or Malaysia. You would want to do that trip in winter though.

Try TCS for carnets. Last time I checked, I could not get a carnet from the ADAC for my UK car, even as a German citizen.

Thanks fellas,

This is starting to look like the wrong year for this trip. More like hopscotch than a good overland trip.

I’ll keep looking. Thanks for the help.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
