Meet the Happy Camel
Friday morning my wife and I pulled the trigger on our 2018 Ural Gear Up in preparation for a 2019 trip from Deadhorse to Ushuaia.
Interesting side note...the color is called Classic Aurora. It is a custom color developed by Ural for Ural of New England. It is sort of a semi-matte battleship gray. It is named after the Russian warship that fired the first shot of the Russian Revolution
As of now, it is literally the only Ural in existence painted that color

Thanks! And, thanks for all the inspiration and help that is informing our planning. HU is a such a great resource! And, I really enjoy your contributions to Adventure Radio Rider RAW.
See you at the Ontario HUBB (but, on my F800GS, the Goat, rather than the Happy Camel!)

I’m not sure of that model. But, Ural of NE/Alphacars has about 30 Russian autos in the showroom.
Very cool dealer!

Yup, definitely a Volga. With a Lada Samara under it, and what looks like a little LuAZ next to that - amazing little offroad buggy with an aircooled two-stroke engine, based on a Soviet ripoff of the original Fiat Cinquecento.

Briefing for journey through Mexico, central and South America...
Happy Camel,
I would be remiss if I did not provide you this video prior to your departure.
The hammock is so tightly woven into Latin American culture that I am compelled give a bon voyage gift.
It is my husband "xfiltrate," former member in good standing of the HUBB, demonstrating how to enter a Hennessy Hammock! A hammock is a must have for each of you during your upcoming sojourn.
A little separation goes a long way.
That is the Sea of Cortez in the background sometimes referred to as the Gulf of California. The video was directed by me but the talent was all xfiltrate and filmed in Kino Bay , Mexico circa 2016.
Enjoy. And begin to understand the mañana complex that you will come to understand and love and you ride into Latin American culture.... the hammock is a good start toward cultural understanding. A big sombrero? Well I will save that for the next video.

Thanks Rosa! My wife gave me a hammock some years ago. At the time, I didn’t interpret it as a "separation" device!
I’m very much looking forward to the mañana lifestyle!
We’re taking possession of the Happy Camel (2018 Ural GU) next Friday and are looking forward to our shorter shakedown trips over the next year.
Thanks again!!
Mike

Congratulations!
If you don't mind a kind suggestion from a new member... As the north is where I live (sitting in Old Crow Yukon at the moment) I feel qualified to comment.
Are familiar with the Dempster highway? Now that it is open to Tok you can drive all the way to the Arctic ocean. Anyone who has done both the Dempster and the Dalton will have to admit that the Dempster is the better choice. Absolutely knock your socks off scenery. Do some research and see for yourself. I see no reason not to!
Its been related that the Dalton is to be endured while the Dempster is to be enjoyed.
Great trip either way.

Thanks for the suggestion!! I think we’ll take your advice. I endured the Dalton four years ago...6 broken ribs and a broken foot. Made for a long ride from the Atigun Pass to Deadhorse!
Tok has my favorite campground...the Eagles Claw, so I’ll definitely go there.
Also planning take the TOW Highway again to Dawson. Love that town! We can pick up the Dempster there of course.
Thanks again,
Mike

My silly typo. Meant to say "Now that it is open to Tuk (as in Tuktoyaktuk) you can drive to the Arctic Ocean." Sorry.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
