Road trip from Baku to Bishkek

Hi Steven, hi all,

me and my brother are planning a road trip with our own car in August from Baku to Bishkek.

We should go through Turkmenistan (Turkmenbasi, Ashgabat, Davara) enter Uzbekistan from Dashoguz and go through Khiva - Bukhara - Samarcanda then through the border crossing point of Denau/Tursunzade or Panjakent heading to the Pamir Highway all the way up to Bishkek (cho thuê xe đi Sapa). The trip should take approximately 18 days.

I know this sound kinda crazy...

I would like to know if in your opinion this sounds doable or not. Is it ok to travel throughout the Turkmenistan desert in August?

I am also trying to gather information on the current status of gas/diesel supply around Bukhara. I've read some posts and driving section which seems not very comforting...

Last but not least any hint on the Dashoguz, the Denau and the Pamir highway crossing points for self driven cars?

Thanks a lot,

Fuel in Uzbekistan and more

Hi Taranguien

I‘ve done Uzbekistan last summer.
All vehicles in the country run on LPG. Petrol is available on the private black market only. And this is how we did:
Ask the guy at the hotel/guesthouse reception for petrol. He will effect a couple of phonecalls and organise it for you. You can get from 80 up to 95 depending on how lucky you are and howmuch you are prepared to spend. Sometimes the fuel was delivered right to the hotel. Advise: Take a fuel funnel from Touratech with you in order to clean the fuel given from dirt and water. Doing this we had absolutely no issues with both our bikes (2012 BMW R1200 GS Adventure).
Costs per liter were approximately 4500 to 5000 Som (summer 2017).

Turkmenistan: We didn‘t get transit visas for Turkmenistan. So we had to cross the Caspian Sea from Baku to Aqtau in Kasachstan.
How that feels you can get in my thread

Hope all this is helpful.

Enjoy the ride. And don‘t forget the city of Xiva - nicer than Boxoro or Samarkand ;-)

Cheers Silvio

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
