Sign for Supply Sharing
I was wondering what travelers might think of an idea I had for placing a sign outside your tent that read "Supply Share".
This would indicate to other travelers and campers in a campground that you might have items that you would like to trade.
Maybe you only carry a small amount of shampoo or cooking oil to save space in your panniers and you are out. So you put out your sign and someone might come over to chat. You can mention that you are out of that item and that you have a dozen eggs for example, but you only plan on eating 4. Would they want to trade some eggs for some shampoo. Just an example, but I am sure you get the idea.
Please let me know if you like the sign idea or maybe you have a different practice that would work better for sharing supplies.
Thanks!

I could see this become a thing that could catch on, but probably not my kind of thing. If I have any eggs to spare, I just ask if someone wants it. If I am all out of shampoo,
and in dire need of a cleansing, I'lll ask arround. I would feel uncomfortable trading such items.
Maybe I would put up a sign for something more substantial, and more specific - like finding I brought items that for some reason I don't need (i.e. wrong type of sleeping bag for where I am heading)... things that cost a lot more than a few eggs that I would want to carry anymore.

Been a while since I carried a dozen eggs any distance on a bike. And if I have surplus stuff that someone else needs I tend to just give it to them than start haggling over a trade. I've been on the receiving end of other people's generosity too many times to think I need to gain some advantage. Plus it would need to be a big sign to say the same thing in English, French, German, Spanish, Greek ... Nice idea but I'll stick to just talking to people.

Nice idea TJ. Must agree with some of the comments. I'm happy to ask and most people are happy to share. I would always offer something in return if I had it, so the 'share' side of things. I rather like the sign idea because there may be others that have an excess of, for example, shampoo or washing up liquid, that you never know about without. Most on a long journey don't like carrying a larger bottle and most on a longer journey loathe the idea of waste. One side thing that I like about this is that by doing it I could end up with meeting people I might not have done otherwise. Bonus. Thanks for sharing the thought. Not for everyone of course, but then, everyone's different. Thank goodness. Cheers.

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
