Your link doesn't appear to be working (for me, at least).

Mark, the problem was an extra http:// in the link - the software has that "pre-filled in" and highlighted for you when you click the link to make a link - usually you can just paste the full url in and it's fine. Have a look when you make a link and watch for that - you can always edit it if needed.

I rode from Palenque to San Christobal on a m/c about 16 months ago. The road was eerily quiet, even then.

What a tragedy! A local friend tells me murders of locals are common and just not reported. Now tourists are the target too.

Mexico - It's not Kansas Toto

It was a deadly section in '97 when I went through. After I had done so, locals told me I should not have - this warning was after the horse was out of the barn and was pre-Internet. Seems it's still a deadly hot spot. Two fellows on bicycles would have been an easy target - motorcycles move a lot faster.

Advice: no area for camping

Sage advice from a more recent motorbike traveler: Avoid if going solo.

How sad. Mexico has some very violent pockets. I was in San Cristobal a few years ago, but came from Guate at the Mesilla border. I didn't realize that it was that bad in that area.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
