TIFFANY COATES (Globebusters) EMERGENCY
My name is Erdem Yücel (Los Angeles) , I'm a friend of Tiffany Coates, who is on a motorcycle tour in China with GlobeBusters.
I received a call from SPOT Emergency Service. Apparently, she has pressed the HELP and 911 buttons on her SPOT device at 5:37 Pacific Time . Which is around Friday 1 AM UK time.
She is in China:
+35° 56' 5.28", +79° 15' 43.06"
35.934800, 79.261961 - Google Maps
The information is publicly viewable on her tracking page as well:
SPOT Shared Page
I didn't know I was her emergency contact. I don't have her family contacts or her health details. SPOT is trying to reach them. They've already started the rescue procedure due to the type of message she'd sent.
Please contact me if you know her boyfriend or family.
Or send my information to them so I can give them the SPOT contact number.
Please also reply to this post and send me an e-mail if you've heard from the GLOBEBUSTER Silk Road & Everest Team recently.

Cancel emergency
Tiff's message status turned back to O.K. Which means she cancelled the emergency. Spot also notified me that they have reached her mother. We're all waiting to hear back from her. :confused1:

kinda proves (unless you like the world to know where you are )
that this spot device is really useless unless backed by a real organised plan of action both local and international.
A bit like a satellite phone- who you gonna call when your 3,4,5 000 miles + from home?? not to mention the panic you wud cause
Unless this is a PR trick
Better buy local SIM card and know embassy or local police number I think.

For what it's worth the system is indeed only as good as the plan behind it. Good to hear that it's not a real problem but hopefully a useful exercise for all involved. Tiff is one smart lady and I'm sure she wouldn't have left too much out of her plans.

How Embarrassing
HI Folks
Now in Tibet - many thanks for your worried thoughts and best wishes.
The SPOT locator came off my bike - completely my fault in a befuddled high altitude moment. I realised some distance down the road but had to stay with my group and tried to do something about it that evening.
Someone in the village must have picked it up and pressed the 911 button setting off a state of emergency and then somehow cancelled it as well.
When I initially got my SPOT (Christmas present from m y boyfriend so he knlws where I am ), I asked for just the tracking facility, but they said no and insisted it has the 911 feature as standard. and this is what happens.
anyway, having a great time

I'm glad you're OK. I had the exact same thing happen in Nicaragua when the Spot fell off the bike. I didn't notice it until I was in Costa Rica and my family was panicking for 4 hours before I managed to contact them.
That is one of the shortcomings of this device, but I still swear by it.
I hope you're having a blast, even though I'm seriously jealous.

Glad you are OK.
Proves the old theory that if you fit something with a big red button marked "Emergency use only", regardless of language or culture, someone will press it just to see what happens!

Let's hope that they press that red button again, once they get to their home - that would give you a pretty good opportunity to recover the device from them.
