What’s Important When Choosing a Hotel on a Motorcycle Trip?
Hey fellow riders and road adventurers!
My name is Mike, and I’m working on a project aimed at making it easier for us motorcycle travelers to find the perfect hotel. I’d love to get your insights and hear about your experiences to make sure we’re focusing on what really matters to you.
What are the key things you look for when picking a place to stay on a bike trip? For example:
Does it matter if the hotel has a secure parking area for your bike?
Is it important for you to have a spot to dry clothes or even a small area for minor repairs?
Do you look for options like late check-in or early check-out flexibility?
What about room comfort: is having a shower, a comfy bed, or maybe even a kitchenette something you value?
Or are there other factors you always check before booking a hotel?
I’d be super grateful if you could share your experiences or preferences. Every bit of feedback helps us build something truly useful for the motorcycle community! :v:
Thanks in advance, and ride safe!

Who are you, and what are you building for the motorcycle community?
I'm sorry, but given the number of websites and services that crowd-source information with zero effort for free and then monetise it has left a bitter taste in my mouth.
This site is an incredible resource for the community, built over many years by Grant and Susan, and the book and map resources by Scott and co. are the result of hard work and exploration in the field ... to then use that resource to leverage information and good will into profit for someone else would be intensely selfish in my opinion.

Tell me about it:
For several years I was a major contributor to a website for cruising sailors called 'Active Captain', which then got sold to Garmin, whereupon they demanded a hefty annual fee to access the information. As I was providing far more information to the site than I was ever gleaning from it, I declined this monetised membership offer and ignored their subsequent reminders.
About six months later I received a personal email from the team now running the show expressing surprise/concern at having seen I was still submitting information and updates to 'Noonsite' (a still free-to-user sailing website) but was no longer posting that same information on their own.
Having replied to explain that I wasn't prepared to sign-up and pay for the information, they emailed me once again to advise that while there was now a charge, this was only for accessing information and that I could still submit information/advice free of charge. WTF?

Sometimes the gall of even business types is surprising ... though I am becoming desensitised to it given current online and IRL goings on, the final contact in your story is particularly brazen

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
