BAM road
Not sure where to post this question so I’m tying here J
I have just completed riding over the West half (i.e. from Irkutsk to Tynda) of the Russian BAM in Siberia. I did this with a group of 5 other riders with KUDU expeditions and it was a great trip. I have been told that I may be the first woman to have ridden the BAM but have no way of confirming this. Does anyone know of any other woman who has ridden the BAM or how I can find this information out?
Cheers Lorraine

Sorry Lorraine, but you are not
A Russian woman (Sasha Teplyakova) did the western part in 2005 and returned to do the whole road all the way to the pacific in 2010.
Eric and Gail Haws also rode the BAM when it was in much better condition back in 1989 - 1991. Gail was a pillion however, so you may actually be the first foreign woman off the top of my head to have ridden the Western BAM. If I think of any other women I will add to the thread.
Kudu had been in touch with me earlier in the year for info on the road and waypoints, and I did brief them, suggesting it would probably be too tough for the average tour group. I am amazed they have actually gone thru with it, so kudos to Kudu and kudos to the group for being the first commercial group do do the western part of the BAM - you guys were obviously not the average group!

Cheers for the info Colebatch
Yup our group were certainly not run of the mill a great team who really pulled together when it got tough. Even thought having a support vehicle is great on a trip so that you don’t need to carry your own luggage it was tough getting it through a lot of places and having just the bikes would have been better (especially the Kuanda bridge when we had to put the vehicles on the train to get over it). However all in all it was a great trip. Without a good group who sticks together and keeps motivating each other I think the trip would be very different.

Membership - help keep us going!
Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.
You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
