Less is more. Don't take anything you cannot afford to loose.

Africa is a big place. I'd take both a map and a GPS. It would not be a 'cheap' GPS nor the most expensive.
The GPS would have OSM maps downloaded on to it as a minimum. I'd use JOSM (a OSM tool) to look at where I'm going and add any detail from the built in bing satellite data before I left. That should give you reasonable tracks and roads if they are viewable from satellites.
The paper map .. for overall planing .. and asking directions. Some people have trouble with paper maps .. they have a lot more trouble with a GPS .. so the paper map is required.
---------
Security .. locks, chains and alarms .. If they want it they will take it. Your slowing them down or getting rid of the less professional thief. Some places have 'street minders' .. use them. I'd take a light mid range cable and lock.
What you take is up to you. But the sayings do apply - Less is More.
